Sometimes the biggest Voice auditions aren’t the ones with huge belts and impossible high notes. Sometimes a singer simply opens his mouth, delivers something completely different, and makes everyone stop and listen. That’s exactly what happened when 18-year-old Owen Uffens performed “Everybody’s Talkin’” during the Season 30 premiere.
Owen, from Rigby, Idaho, walked onto the Blind Auditions stage and delivered his own smooth, understated version of the Harry Nilsson classic. Instead of trying to overpower the song, he relied on his soft delivery, distinctive tone and effortless falsetto.
Adam Levine quickly noticed what was happening. The Maroon 5 frontman turned his chair first, clearly hearing something special in Owen’s voice before the teenager had even finished showing everything he could do.
Then came a moment that added some comedy to the audition. Kelly Clarkson turned around too, officially turning Owen’s audition into a battle between the two veteran Coaches. Adam’s reaction when he realized Kelly had joined the fight made the competition between them even more entertaining.
Clarkson immediately focused on the quality that made Owen so different. She described his tone as “dreamy” and praised the way he moved between different parts of his voice, including a falsetto she called flawless.
Adam saw something equally valuable. Rather than asking Owen to become a bigger or louder singer, Levine argued that his restraint was actually his strength. He called Owen a potential “sleeper best voice” of the season and emphasized that a singer doesn’t need the biggest voice in the competition to be memorable.
What makes the audition even more surprising is Owen’s limited stage experience. Before appearing on The Voice, he reportedly had never performed outside his high school. Going from school performances to singing in front of four superstar Coaches therefore represented an enormous jump.
Owen is a 2026 graduate of Rigby High School, but music has been something he has taken seriously for several years. He released his debut single, “Einstein,” when he was only 15 and said at the time that he hoped eventually to make music his full-time career.
He has continued creating music since then. By the time he arrived on The Voice, Owen already had several original releases available on streaming platforms, including “Astronauts,” “The Trip” and his March 2026 release “It’s as Real as You Make It.”
After the audition, the decision came down to two experienced Coaches. Clarkson loved the unusual quality of Owen’s voice, while Levine argued that their musical instincts simply made sense together and that he understood how to work with a singer whose strength comes from tone rather than vocal fireworks.
Owen ultimately agreed and chose Team Adam. That gave Levine one of the premiere’s most distinctive young singers and paired Owen with a Coach who appeared determined to protect the exact quality that made his audition stand out in the first place.
It may only be Day One, and it is far too early to know where Owen’s journey will end, but “Everybody’s Talkin’” certainly introduced viewers to a different kind of contender. He didn’t need vocal acrobatics or an enormous final note to get two chairs—just that dreamy, instantly recognizable voice. And with Adam already calling him a potential sleeper voice of the season, Owen Uffens may be one of the Season 30 names worth remembering.
