Joe Henley’s first major performance has already caught the attention of some big names in country music. After the 19-year-old Alabama singer impressed Riley Green and Kelly Clarkson on “The Voice,” country legend Randy Travis shared an enthusiastic reaction to his audition.
Henley made his Season 30 debut with Travis Tritt’s 1991 No. 1 hit “Anymore.” His deep, traditional country voice quickly connected with the Coaches, and both Clarkson and Green turned their chairs for him.
What made the moment even more impressive was Henley’s lack of professional experience. Before appearing on “The Voice,” he had never played a proper gig, with much of his previous singing experience coming through church and his grandparents’ truck-stop ministry.
Henley entered the competition already hoping Green would turn for him. Before the audition, he talked about how excited he was to see country music represented by Green and admitted he wanted to watch Green and Clarkson battle for him.
He got his wish almost immediately. Both Coaches turned early in “Anymore,” and it quickly became obvious that Clarkson was going to have a difficult time keeping Henley’s attention away from Green.
Henley’s love for traditional country music also became clear after the performance. When discussing his favorite singers, he mentioned names including Travis Tritt, Keith Whitley, Don Williams and George Strait.
Green eventually discovered that Henley was a fan of his music as well. After Henley revealed that “My Way” was his favorite Riley Green song, Green grabbed a guitar and walked onto the stage for an unexpected duet with the teenager.
That moment appeared to make Henley’s eventual decision much easier. Despite Clarkson fighting hard to recruit him, he ultimately chose Team Riley, becoming Green’s first team member during his debut season as a Coach.
But another memorable moment came after the audition when Randy Travis reacted publicly to Henley’s performance. Travis shared the audition on Instagram and praised what he had heard from the young singer.
“Sure enjoyed this!!” Travis wrote, before describing Henley’s vocals and interpretation of the song as “incredible.” It was already an enormous compliment for a 19-year-old making one of his first major appearances.
Then Travis went even further with a prediction about Henley’s future, writing, “He’ll go FAR!!!!” Coming from one of country music’s most recognizable voices, the shoutout added another special moment to Henley’s already remarkable introduction.
In the space of one Blind Audition, Joe Henley went from a teenager with virtually no professional gig experience to earning two chair turns, singing alongside Riley Green, joining Team Riley and receiving public praise from Randy Travis. Where his “Voice” journey ultimately leads remains to be seen, but Henley’s first night certainly gave country fans plenty of reasons to remember his name.
