Riley Green entered “The Voice” Season 30 with a pretty clear strategy for building his first-ever team. The country star wanted country singers—and he wasn’t shy about saying he wanted as many of them as possible.
During the premiere, Riley explained that he believed a country Artist had a strong chance of winning the entire competition. His plan was simple: fill Team Riley with talented country voices and give himself the strongest possible shot at the trophy.
That strategy appeared to be working perfectly. Riley landed 19-year-old Alabama singer Joe Henley after his impressive performance of Travis Tritt’s “Anymore,” making him one of the first important additions to Team Riley.
He also secured sisters Ferryn and Brinkley Wright after their standout Blind Audition earned the season’s first four-chair turn. Riley’s country-heavy team was quickly beginning to take shape.
Then 19-year-old Harmony McKee arrived and unexpectedly gave Riley a reason to break his own plan.
Harmony, a Tennessee native, normally considers herself an R&B, soul and bluesy-rock singer. In fact, before walking onto “The Voice” stage, she had reportedly never performed a country song.
That made her Blind Audition choice particularly surprising. Harmony decided to perform Miranda Lambert’s fiery country hit “Gunpowder & Lead,” believing she could put her own personality and vocal style into the song.
Her gamble worked. Harmony’s powerful performance earned chair turns from both Riley Green and Adam Levine, setting up another battle between the two Coaches.
But both Riley and Adam were surprised when Harmony revealed that she wasn’t actually a country singer. Adam immediately saw that information as an advantage, considering Riley had openly talked about building a country-focused team.
Harmony and Riley soon discovered an unexpected connection, however. Both had developed an appreciation for Johnny Cash through their grandfathers, giving Riley another way to connect with her beyond the genre she normally performs.
Kelly Clarkson even encouraged Harmony to consider Riley, pointing out that her different sound could actually make her stand out on his team. Harmony ultimately agreed and chose Team Riley, officially becoming the singer who made Riley bend his own country-only strategy.
Riley couldn’t have been happier about the unexpected addition. He praised the way Harmony made the Miranda Lambert song her own and the confidence she showed while commanding the stage. Riley may have entered Season 30 determined to collect country singers, but Harmony proved that one exceptional audition could be enough to completely change the plan.
