Riley Green and Adam Levine turned a spectacular Blind Audition into one of the funniest Coach battles of “The Voice” Season 30 after 15-year-old Koumba Diallo stepped onto the stage.
Koumba, a high school freshman from Delano, California, performed Demi Lovato’s challenging “Stone Cold.” Her powerful vocals impressed the entire panel and ultimately earned her the coveted four-chair turn.
Queen Latifah was the first Coach to hit her button. Kelly Clarkson and Riley soon followed, while Adam waited until near the end before completing the four-chair sweep.
After discovering Koumba was only 15, Adam admitted that he was nowhere near her level of development when he was that age. That innocent comment immediately gave Riley the perfect opportunity to start teasing him.
Riley jokingly suggested that Adam’s teenage years happened back in the 1960s. Adam quickly realized where the joke was going and laughed about Riley calling him old.
But Riley wasn’t finished. As Adam tried to convince Koumba to join his team, Riley continued joking that the Maroon 5 singer was so old-fashioned that he probably wouldn’t know how to use modern technology.
Riley joked about sending Adam an email when he didn’t have a computer and even mentioned trying to contact him through a beeper. Adam played along, telling Koumba she could simply leave him a message on his answering machine.
Eventually the jokes reached another level. When Adam tried to use Koumba’s story about her mother making her prove herself as part of his recruiting pitch, Riley jumped in with the final jab: Adam was more like her granddad.
Adam had the perfect comeback, pointing out that “Grandpa” had won “The Voice” the previous season. Riley immediately joked that the comment was going to end up on the “world wide web.”
Away from the comedy, Riley had enormous praise for Koumba. He described her audition as the most perfect and powerful performance he had seen so far and confidently told the teenager that she was going to have a career.
Kelly ultimately managed to end the Riley-Adam comedy battle with the pitch that mattered most. She spoke seriously with Koumba about navigating the music industry, choosing the right songs and surrounding herself with people willing to give her truthful advice.
Koumba eventually chose Team Kelly, leaving Riley and Adam without the four-chair standout they had fought so hard—and joked so much—to recruit. But Riley wasn’t ready to abandon his newest nickname, later declaring Adam officially “Grandpa Adam.” With Levine firing right back that Riley is almost 40 himself, their hilarious rivalry looks like it could become one of Season 30’s most entertaining running jokes.
