For Kyle Davis, music had already been a major part of his life long before he walked onto The Voice stage.
The 61-year-old singer from Prince George, Virginia, had experienced success in the music business and even had a record deal with producer Phil Ramone. But after stepping away from his career to raise his children, Davis eventually found himself far removed from the spotlight.
He never expected that chapter of his life to suddenly reopen.
Then his daughter made a decision that would change everything.
Without telling her father, she submitted his audition video to The Voice. Davis went through the show’s screening process and eventually found himself standing on one of the biggest stages in television music.
When the Blind Audition began, Davis chose Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.”
With his guitar in hand, he delivered a performance that immediately caught the attention of the coaches. One by one, the chairs began to turn.
Kelly Clarkson was the first to turn around.
Riley Green followed, then Adam Levine, and finally Queen Latifah. By the end of the performance, all four coaches were facing Davis.
The moment also made history. At 61, Davis became the oldest contestant to receive a four-chair turn on The Voice.
The coaches each had their own reasons for wanting him on their team.
Clarkson praised the character of his voice and compared aspects of his sound to artists such as Peter Gabriel and Bono. Levine also highlighted how difficult the song was to cover and said Davis’ performance connected with him.
Green focused on something equally important: Davis had the kind of distinctive voice the show was designed to discover and showcase.
Queen Latifah, who was the final coach to turn, also congratulated Davis and told him he deserved the four-chair turn.
