Riley Green thought he was putting together a classic country Battle on The Voice Season 30.
What he didn’t realize was that the two singers he paired together had already started developing a relationship away from the stage.
Team Riley artists Caroline Alexis and Everett Bounds faced each other during the October 12 Battle episode with Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn’s classic duet “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.”
But before they ever performed the song, viewers learned something Riley apparently hadn’t known when he created the pairing:
Caroline and Everett had been going on dates.
The connection began backstage during the Blind Auditions.
Caroline revealed that Everett surprised her with flowers and a handwritten note asking her to dinner, despite the two not having spent much time talking beforehand.
She accepted.
By the time the Battles arrived, the pair had already gone on a couple of dates and were continuing to get to know each other.
Everett wasn’t exactly hiding his interest either.
He told cameras that his first reaction when he saw Caroline was essentially amazement at how beautiful she was and said she was the kind of person he could imagine having as a girlfriend.
Caroline took a slightly more cautious approach.
She said she wanted to move slowly and continue learning more about him, while praising Everett for being uplifting and supportive.
Then Riley unknowingly gave the new couple perhaps the most appropriate Battle song possible.
“Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” is built around playful back-and-forth chemistry between two country singers.
Riley and Battle advisor Carly Pearce encouraged Caroline and Everett to make the lyrics believable and bring genuine flirtation into the performance.
For Everett, that wasn’t exactly a difficult acting assignment.
Their real-life chemistry quickly became part of the performance.
Kelly Clarkson called the Battle fun and praised its old-school country feel, comparing the energy to classic country duets.
She complimented Caroline’s storytelling tone and character while also recognizing Everett’s ability to open up vocally and show more range.
Adam Levine admitted that traditional country was outside his musical comfort zone but still believed both singers had performed well, giving a slight edge to Everett.
Riley faced the much harder decision.
He praised Caroline for bringing the sass and attitude the song needed.
But he believed Everett appeared especially natural in the upbeat traditional-country setting.
That ultimately determined the result.
Riley chose Everett Bounds as the Battle winner.
Caroline was eliminated.
And because no coach used a Steal on her, her Season 30 competition officially ended.
That created an unusual situation for the new couple.
One person was continuing on Team Riley while the other suddenly had to leave the competition that brought them together.
Caroline had actually joked about that possibility before the result.
She explained that they were in a situation few people ever experience and revealed that Everett had already teased her about continuing to answer his calls even if one of them left the show.
The elimination may have separated them competitively, but it doesn’t appear to have created bad blood personally.
Caroline and Everett continue following each other on social media and collaborated on a joint Instagram post surrounding their Battle performance.
That suggests they remain on good terms after filming.
However, viewers hoping for confirmation that they are now officially boyfriend and girlfriend may need to keep waiting.
As of October 13, their current relationship status hasn’t been publicly confirmed.
Caroline is from Alabama while Everett is from California, meaning any continued relationship would also involve significant distance.
Still, The Voice has already given them something neither expected.
Caroline entered hoping to advance as a country singer.
Everett entered with the same goal.
Instead, they met backstage, exchanged flowers and a handwritten invitation, went on dates and eventually found themselves standing opposite each other in one of the most naturally romantic Battle songs Riley Green could have chosen.
Only Everett survived the Battle.
But whether their romance survives beyond The Voice may now be the part of their story fans are most curious to follow.
