Bryan Jaymes walked onto The Voice stage and delivered one of the most memorable Blind Auditions of Season 30, but it wasn’t only his remarkable voice that had everyone talking. What happened when he finally chose his coach turned an emotional audition into one of the funniest moments of the night.
The 39-year-old Louisiana native performed Hall & Oates’ “Every Time You Go Away,” showing off a smooth, soulful upper register that immediately caught Adam Levine’s attention.
Adam quickly turned his chair, clearly impressed by what he was hearing. Queen Latifah and Riley Green eventually followed, giving Bryan a powerful three-chair turn and three very different coaches to choose from.
Kelly Clarkson was the only coach who didn’t turn, but even she appeared stunned once Bryan finished singing. One of the biggest surprises came when Bryan began speaking and revealed a naturally much deeper speaking voice than the coaches expected after hearing the range of his singing voice.
Bryan brought plenty of experience to the stage. His full name is Bryan Jaymes Windom, and although he comes from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he is now based in Los Angeles. His musical roots stretch all the way back to childhood, when he began singing around the age of 10 with the East Baton Rouge Parish Boys Choir.
His journey eventually expanded into R&B, pop, gospel and music production. He has worked as a singer and song leader at a California church and has also released original music of his own.
That experience could be heard throughout his Blind Audition. Bryan moved between softer moments and much bigger vocal passages, displaying the kind of range that made the coaches increasingly curious about the man behind the voice.
Once the chairs were facing him, the competition began. Adam made an especially strong pitch, hoping his early turn and enthusiasm would convince Bryan that Team Adam was where he belonged.
Then came the moment that completely fooled him.
When Carson Daly asked Bryan to choose his coach, Bryan began his answer by saying Adam’s name. Levine immediately thought he had won and started celebrating before Bryan could finish his sentence.
But Bryan wasn’t choosing him.
After briefly praising Adam, Bryan revealed that he was actually joining Queen Latifah. Levine’s celebration instantly disappeared as he dropped his head onto his desk while the other coaches laughed at how perfectly Bryan had set him up. Daly summed up the moment by pointing out just how crushed Adam looked.
Bryan even added another playful touch by singing part of the theme associated with Queen Latifah’s classic sitcom before officially heading to Team Queen. What began as an impressive three-chair Blind Audition ended with Bryan Jaymes securing a place in the competition—and delivering a coach-selection fake-out Adam Levine probably won’t forget anytime soon.
