Chari delivered one of the standout Blind Auditions of The Voice Season 30, turning all four chairs with an emotional performance of Oleta Adams’ “Get Here” and leaving every coach hoping she would join their team.
The 31-year-old surgical technologist entered the competition with a deeply personal reason for choosing the song. Her father had introduced her to “Get Here,” and it was also one of the last songs her mother heard her sing before she died.
That connection gave Chari’s performance an emotional weight even before the coaches knew the story behind it. Once she began singing, however, it was her voice that commanded their attention.
Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, Queen Latifah and Riley Green all pressed their buttons, giving Chari the coveted four-chair turn and instantly making her one of the most sought-after singers of the Blind Auditions.
After the final note, the competition shifted from Chari trying to impress the coaches to the coaches trying to impress Chari.
Adam made an especially confident pitch. He praised what he had heard and told Chari that he believed she possessed the kind of voice that could take her extremely far in the competition.
Kelly also recognized the significance of Chari’s journey. Here was someone who had built a career as a surgical technologist while continuing to carry a remarkable musical talent that was now being revealed on one of television’s biggest singing stages.
Riley Green attempted to make his own connection with Chari. As a first-time coach, he pointed out that neither of them had won The Voice before and suggested they could try to accomplish that goal together.
But Queen Latifah found perhaps the most memorable way to describe what Chari had just done. Playing off her medical profession, Queen praised the “surgical precision” of the performance and admired how Chari had taken a well-known song and made it feel like her own.
With four chairs facing her, Chari suddenly had one of the best problems a contestant can have. Every coach wanted her, and each offered a very different reason why their team could be the right home for her voice.
Then Chari made her decision.
Despite Adam’s confident pitch and the attention from all four coaches, she chose Queen Latifah, handing the first-time coach another major victory in the Blind Auditions and officially joining Team Queen.
The decision only added to the excitement surrounding Chari’s audition. A surgical technologist who arrived carrying the memory of her parents had walked onto The Voice stage, turned every chair and left with Queen Latifah as her coach. Now comes the bigger question: just how far can that voice take her?
