Luke Bryan has offered an encouraging update on longtime American Idol co-judge Lionel Richie following several difficult months that forced the 77-year-old music legend to step away from performing.
Richie’s health became a concern earlier this year after he experienced dizziness during a June concert with Earth, Wind & Fire. The performance was stopped, and Richie was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Another concerning episode followed after an August concert in St. Louis, when Richie reportedly spent several days undergoing medical evaluation.
His representative later confirmed that Richie had undergone a successful procedure for atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm. Richie was said to be recovering well, although several performances were postponed or canceled to give him time to recuperate.
With fans continuing to wonder how Richie is doing, Bryan has now revealed that he recently spoke directly with his friend.
During an appearance on Good Morning America, Bryan said he called Richie simply because he wanted him to know he was loved and that people were thinking about him.
Richie didn’t answer immediately, but later returned the call with a reassuring message.
According to Bryan, Richie told him, “Man, I’m just telling ya I’m alright.”
Bryan said hearing directly from Richie was comforting and confirmed that his fellow judge is “doing well.” But he also acknowledged something that may have contributed to the concern surrounding Richie’s recent months: the legendary performer rarely seems to stop working.
“He works hard,” Bryan said, before adding that Richie has “gotta slow down a bit.”
The reassuring update arrives shortly after another major piece of news for American Idol viewers. Richie has officially confirmed that he will return alongside Bryan and Carrie Underwood for the landmark 25th season, with Ryan Seacrest also returning as host when the series comes back in 2027.
For now, Richie appears focused on recovering before returning to his demanding schedule. And although Bryan clearly expects his friend back beside him at the judges’ table, his message was equally clear: after everything Richie has been through recently, taking a little more time to rest might be exactly what he needs.
