TWO BIG COMPARISONS — Kayleigh Mathews Earns Four-Chair Turn on ‘The Voice’ as Coaches Fight to Win Her

Kayleigh Mathews walked onto The Voice stage with deep ties to country music, but by the time her Blind Audition ended, all four coaches were fighting for the chance to work with her.

The 31-year-old singer performed Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name,” taking on a song Riley Green immediately acknowledged came with enormous expectations.

Those expectations didn’t appear to intimidate Kayleigh.

Her traditional country tone and emotional delivery convinced Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Riley Green and Queen Latifah to turn their chairs, giving Kayleigh one of Season 30’s coveted four-chair turns.

Adam quickly made it clear how badly he wanted her, telling Kayleigh he was prepared to fight harder than ever to convince her to join his team.

Riley approached the pitch from a very different angle.

He praised Kayleigh for taking on Vince Gill, calling him one of country music’s greatest vocalists and telling her that she had successfully handled the enormous challenge of singing one of his signature songs.

The performance even transported Riley back to his Alabama roots.

But Kelly Clarkson may have offered the night’s most interesting vocal comparison.

Listening closely to Kayleigh’s tone and the way she stretched certain notes, Kelly said she could hear similarities to country stars Patty Loveless and LeAnn Rimes.

Kelly described Kayleigh as something of a musical combination of several female singers she has loved over the years, making it clear that there was something immediately familiar — but still distinctive — about her sound.

Queen Latifah, however, described the performance in more emotional terms.

She told Kayleigh that the audition had “took me to church” and said it developed into a spiritual experience as the song continued.

For Queen, that emotional connection was exactly why Kayleigh deserved to see all four chairs facing her.

The competition between the coaches soon became increasingly playful.

Riley even produced a duck blind in an attempt to block Adam from continuing his pitch, leading Adam to joke that the two men may have ruined their chances entirely.

As it turned out, he was right.

After listening to all four coaches, Kayleigh surprised the panel by choosing neither of the country-connected options nor Adam.

Instead, she followed what she described as her “heart and gut” and selected Queen Latifah.

Queen was visibly stunned by the decision but immediately explained why she believed their partnership could work.

Although Kayleigh clearly has country roots, Queen argued that her voice could stretch far beyond one genre, pointing out the connections country music shares with soul, rhythm and blues.

For Kayleigh, the decision was about more than genre.

She praised Queen as both an artist and a person and said she felt there was something genuine about her that made her want the opportunity to work together.

That choice now gives Queen another four-chair contestant as the Blind Auditions approach their conclusion.

And after Kelly Clarkson heard shades of Patty Loveless and LeAnn Rimes while Queen Latifah heard something almost spiritual, Kayleigh Mathews has already given viewers plenty of reasons to watch what she does next.
