Riley Green faced one of his first truly difficult decisions as a coach on The Voice when Season 30 moved directly from the Blind Auditions into the Battles.
For his first Battle, Riley paired solo country singer Brandy Neelly against sister duo Ferryn & Brinkley Wright, giving all three singers Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart.”
The matchup immediately raised questions because Brandy was competing alone against two sisters who had already spent years singing together.
Ferryn and Brinkley entered the Battles with considerable momentum after earning a four-chair turn during their Blind Audition. Their close sibling harmonies had already become one of the qualities that separated them from the rest of Team Riley.
Brandy, however, refused to disappear beside them.

Kelly Clarkson specifically praised the solo singer for managing to stand out despite the difficult setup, acknowledging that competing against singers with an established harmony can be especially challenging.
Kelly also praised Ferryn and Brinkley for how naturally their voices blended and ultimately said she would lean slightly toward the sisters if she were making the decision herself. Adam Levine similarly complimented Brandy for holding her own during the three-part harmonies.
Riley openly acknowledged the biggest advantage the sisters had.
Because Ferryn and Brinkley are family, he said their harmonies are naturally extremely tight — something that is difficult for another singer to reproduce after only a short period of rehearsing together.
Riley admitted that this gave the duo an advantage, joking that Brandy had an advantage of her own because she had previously baked him a birthday cake.
But when the joking ended, Riley had to make his first painful elimination decision.

He chose Ferryn & Brinkley to advance, ending Brandy’s run on the competition.
The decision quickly sparked debate among viewers, with some describing the Battle as essentially a two-against-one matchup and questioning whether a solo performer could ever have an equal chance against a polished duo whose strongest weapon is their built-in harmony.
Riley, however, explained that his decision wasn’t based only on who sounded strongest during that one performance.
He was also thinking ahead.
The new coach said he believes Ferryn and Brinkley have a “really strong chance” of making it through Cut Week, the new Season 30 stage that will dramatically reduce each coach’s team before the Live Shows.
He also pointed out one major factor that makes them different from every other act remaining.
Ferryn & Brinkley are the only duo on the show.
Riley said both sisters are talented individually, but their ability to sing together with such tight harmonies gives them something distinctive that could make them serious contenders later in the competition.
That reasoning explains why Riley was willing to make such a difficult choice despite praising Brandy’s performance.
For him, the decision wasn’t simply Brandy versus Ferryn and Brinkley on one song. It was also about which act he believed had the strongest combination of talent, uniqueness and long-term potential.
Still, viewers who believed Brandy was put at a disadvantage are unlikely to forget the matchup quickly.
Riley may have identified the sisters’ harmony as their biggest weapon — but that same advantage is exactly why some fans believe Brandy faced one of the toughest Battles possible.
And with Cut Week still ahead, Riley’s decision will now be tested by whether Ferryn & Brinkley can turn their unusual advantage into a deep Season 30 run.
