Ciara Miller struggled to hold back her emotions as she spoke publicly for the first time about her unexpected elimination from Dancing With the Stars.
The Summer House star and professional partner Brandon Armstrong were sent home at the end of Mariah Carey Night despite delivering what the judges considered their strongest performance of Season 35.
Ciara and Brandon performed a Jazz routine to Mariah Carey’s “Emotions,” earning three 7s for a total of 21 out of 30 — their highest score of the competition.
Carrie Ann Inaba even described it as Ciara’s best dance so far.
But the improvement wasn’t enough.
When judges’ scores were combined with viewer votes, Ciara and Brandon were eliminated while several lower-scoring couples advanced, including Guillermo Rodriguez and Witney Carson, who had received just 13 out of 30.
After the live show, Ciara admitted she was still trying to understand what had happened.
“I’m sad, obviously. I’m bummed,” she told Entertainment Tonight, adding that she was still processing the result.
But Brandon was much more direct when asked how he felt about losing his partner.
“She shouldn’t have gone home.”
The five-word response perfectly captured his disappointment after watching Ciara produce her best dance only to leave the competition immediately afterward.
Brandon acknowledged that Dancing With the Stars isn’t decided solely by technical dancing.
Viewer votes are combined with judges’ scores, and he pointed out that people vote for contestants for many different reasons because the program is entertainment as much as it is a dance competition.
Still, he said it was frustrating to feel like Ciara was finally reaching her potential only for their journey to suddenly end.
His disappointment was matched by viewers.
Social media filled with messages questioning the result, while the elimination also reportedly surprised contestants and professional dancers backstage. Sharna Burgess said cast members “gasped” when Ciara and Brandon’s names were announced.
Ciara became especially emotional when she was told about the amount of support she was receiving online.
She began crying as she reflected on viewers recognizing how meaningful her partnership with Brandon had become.
Ciara said she couldn’t fully put into words what that support meant to her and admitted she was heartbroken because she had wanted the experience to continue.
The competition had challenged her in a completely different way from reality television.
Ciara explained that being in the public eye can create pressure to present only the most polished version of yourself, while DWTS forced her to become comfortable being imperfect and vulnerable in front of millions of viewers.
She also made clear that her connection with Brandon won’t disappear simply because their ballroom journey has ended.
Ciara joked that Brandon was now stuck with her whether he liked it or not and described them as “friends for life.”
For Brandon, the ending was particularly painful because he believed Ciara was still improving and had more to show.
For Ciara, the tears reflected something bigger than simply leaving a competition.
She had finally delivered the performance she had been working toward, received her best scores yet and felt more confident in the ballroom — only for the journey to end on the same night.
And while the voting result cannot be changed, Brandon Armstrong made his feelings unmistakably clear in just five words:
She shouldn’t have gone home.
