Riley Green faced another painful decision on The Voice Season 30 after pairing two very different country singers — 19-year-old Joe Henley and Nashville performer Kenna Elpers.

And Riley made the challenge even harder by giving them one of his own songs.

Joe and Kenna performed “Don’t Mind If I Do,” Riley’s duet with Ella Langley, during the October 12 Battle episode.

The pairing immediately made sense.

Both singers had country roots, both had originally earned two-chair turns, and both had chosen Riley during the Blind Auditions.

But their levels of experience couldn’t have been more different.

Kenna had already spent years performing professionally in Nashville.

She had even opened for Riley Green before appearing on The Voice.

Joe, meanwhile, entered the competition with almost no live-performance experience at all.

His Blind Audition — Travis Tritt’s “Anymore” — was remarkably his first time performing in front of an audience.

That difference became obvious during Battle rehearsals with Riley and advisor Carly Pearce.

Joe was still learning some of the basics of performing onstage, while Kenna’s experience allowed her to help carry parts of the rehearsal.

Riley openly acknowledged that.

He praised Kenna for having “put in the time” and noted that she helped Joe because so much of the performance side was still new to him.

Carly also recognized something special in both singers.

She praised the light, airy quality of Kenna’s voice while seeing Joe as an artist with enormous raw potential who hadn’t completely grown into his abilities yet.

Riley and Carly even demonstrated parts of the duet themselves while coaching Joe and Kenna on how to sell the chemistry of the song.

The contestants were encouraged to loosen up, interact more naturally and lean into the flirtatious storytelling of the duet.

When Battle time arrived, both delivered.

Riley rose for a standing ovation afterward.

And the other coaches made his decision even more difficult.

Kelly Clarkson praised how different the two singers sounded.

She compared Kenna’s vocal quality to Alison Krauss, while also highlighting the deep country character in Joe’s voice.

Adam Levine appeared especially impressed by Joe.

He told the young singer that he had one of his favorite voices in the entire competition, explaining that Joe possesses the kind of recognizable tone where listeners could immediately know who was singing.

For Adam, that distinctiveness was difficult to overlook.

Queen Latifah also praised Kenna for standing her ground against such a powerful voice.

But when forced to choose between them, Queen admitted she would lean toward Joe.

She had been watching him closely since the Blind Auditions and felt his voice carried unusual power.

That left Riley with the final decision.

On one side was Kenna — experienced, polished and dependable.

On the other was Joe — inexperienced, still developing and occasionally uncomfortable with the mechanics of performing, but possessing a vocal quality several coaches believed couldn’t be taught.

Riley chose Joe Henley.

Kenna Elpers was eliminated.

Riley made clear that his choice wasn’t about Kenna doing anything wrong.

Instead, he said Joe simply possessed a “really unique voice” and a special talent that Riley wanted the opportunity to continue developing.

He also believes Joe could be particularly dangerous when Season 30 reaches Cut Week.

Even after the Battle was finished, the praise continued.

Adam told Riley how good he believed Joe was, while Queen Latifah emphasized that the teenager possessed exactly the kind of voice people remember.

That may ultimately explain Riley’s decision.

Kenna entered the Battle as the more experienced performer.

Joe left it as the singer whose raw voice seemed to make the coaches imagine what he could become.

And after arriving on The Voice having never performed before a live audience, Joe Henley has now survived his first head-to-head test.

For Riley Green, the challenge now changes.

He no longer has to decide whether Joe has potential.

He has to figure out how far that potential can take him.
