Joe Henley Reveals His Special Connection With Riley Green as Kenna Elpers Plays an Unexpected Role in His The Voice Journey

The Voice Season 30 contestant Joe Henley is opening up about the meaningful relationships that have helped transform his experience on the popular singing competition. The 19-year-old Alabama singer recently discussed his growing connection with coach Riley Green and revealed how fellow contestant Kenna Elpers unexpectedly influenced his development as a performer. While Henley has attracted attention for his traditional country voice, his journey has also been shaped by friendships, encouragement, and lessons that have strengthened his confidence in pursuing a professional music career.

Henley’s connection with Green began during the Blind Auditions when he performed Travis Tritt’s “Anymore.” His naturally deep country voice impressed both Green and Kelly Clarkson, who turned their chairs in hopes of recruiting him. However, Henley had already developed an admiration for Green’s music, making the country star an appealing choice before his audition even began. Their shared Alabama roots would soon create an even stronger connection.

One of the most memorable moments occurred when Green stepped away from his coaching chair and joined Henley onstage for an impromptu performance of “My Way.” With Green playing guitar and Henley singing, the two demonstrated their shared appreciation for traditional country music. The unexpected collaboration helped establish a comfortable relationship between the young contestant and his coach before Henley officially joined Team Riley.

During a recent interview, Henley explained that he and Green have several surprising similarities beyond their musical backgrounds. Both grew up in Alabama, enjoy sports, and share similar personalities. Henley described their upbringing as remarkably alike, explaining that these similarities made communicating with Green feel natural. He also recalled Green suggesting that talking with him felt like having a conversation with someone from back home.

That familiarity proved especially valuable as Henley adjusted to the pressure of performing on national television. The young singer admitted that being around someone who understood his background helped him feel more comfortable throughout the competition. Instead of becoming overwhelmed by Green’s celebrity status, Henley was able to relax and focus on improving his performances. He described their interactions as enjoyable and credited the connection with making the overall experience less intimidating.

However, Green was not the only person who influenced Henley’s journey. Fellow Team Riley contestant Kenna Elpers also played an important role when the two were paired during the Battle Rounds. Together, they performed “Don’t Mind If I Do,” the country duet originally recorded by Green and Ella Langley. Although only one singer could advance as the Battle winner, Henley explained that preparing alongside Elpers became an unexpectedly rewarding experience.

Henley spoke warmly about Elpers, praising both her personality and musical talent. He revealed that she helped him develop the harmonies for their duet, offering suggestions that improved their performance. Her willingness to assist him despite their competitive circumstances left a strong impression. Rather than viewing their rehearsals solely as a contest, Henley appreciated the opportunity to learn from a fellow artist who brought different strengths to their collaboration.

The young singer also admitted that Elpers impressed him so much during their Battle performance that he believed she deserved to win. After watching her sing, Henley felt she had delivered her strongest performance yet. Although Green ultimately selected Henley to advance, he continued expressing admiration for his former teammate. He even joked that working alongside him probably helped Elpers develop greater patience, acknowledging the support she provided throughout their preparation.

Beyond the friendships and musical lessons, Henley revealed that appearing on The Voice has changed his understanding of what might be possible for his future. Before entering the competition, he struggled with nervousness and doubts about whether audiences would appreciate his singing. Putting himself in front of unfamiliar listeners felt intimidating, and pursuing a professional music career seemed uncertain. However, progressing through the auditions and Battle Rounds has gradually helped him overcome those concerns.

Henley’s growing confidence comes at an important moment as he prepares for the November 2 Cut Week episode. His recent rendition of Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes” earned a standing ovation from all four coaches, with Clarkson even suggesting that she would be astonished if he failed to reach the finale. Although his place in the Live Shows remains uncertain, Henley now believes that a professional music career could become a reality. With encouragement from Green, valuable lessons from Elpers, and increasing support from viewers, the Alabama singer has gained something that could remain important long after the competition ends: confidence in his own musical future.
