Adam Lambert delivered one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards when he suddenly appeared during a star-studded tribute to George Michael and took over the stage with a powerful performance of “Freedom! ’90.”
The tribute took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 27, marking 10 years since Michael’s death and celebrating a career that helped shape generations of pop music.
Country singer Orville Peck introduced the special segment, reflecting on Michael’s rise from a teenage superstar to one of the most influential singers, songwriters and producers of his generation.
The music then began with Sombr, who performed “Faith” before moving into “Father Figure.” He added an especially personal touch by wearing an original leather jacket that had belonged to Michael and had been worn during his famous Faith era.
RAYE followed with “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” the hit Michael originally recorded with Aretha Franklin. Michael’s original vocals were incorporated into the performance, creating a moment that connected the tribute directly with the late singer.
Teddy Swims then stepped forward for one of Michael’s most recognizable songs, “Careless Whisper,” accompanied by its unmistakable saxophone melody.
But the tribute still had one major surprise left.
As the opening of “Freedom! ’90” began, Adam Lambert emerged onto the stage as an unannounced final guest and immediately changed the energy inside the theater.
Lambert confidently took the lead on the song, using the enormous range and theatrical stage presence that have made him one of rock and pop music’s most recognizable modern vocalists.
