Amanda Mikkel delivered one of the most memorable Blind Auditions of “The Voice” Season 30 when the 31-year-old singer performed a soft, soulful version of “Moon River.” Before she was finished, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Queen Latifah and Riley Green had all turned their chairs.
Amanda is originally from Dayton, Ohio, and now lives in Los Angeles while pursuing her music career. Her road to “The Voice” has required major sacrifices, making the reaction she received from all four Coaches especially meaningful.
Before walking onto the stage, Amanda revealed that she had spent roughly a year and a half living in her car because of the high cost of living in Los Angeles. She keeps her belongings in storage and packs what she needs while continuing to work and chase her musical ambitions.
She has taken on multiple jobs, including work as a makeup assistant and production assistant. Amanda explained that she was willing to sacrifice comfort because she believed strongly in continuing to pursue the career she wanted.
Then came her Blind Audition. Amanda chose “Moon River,” famously recorded by Andy Williams, and her restrained approach immediately caught Adam’s attention. He became the first Coach to turn, beating Kelly to the button by less than a second.
Kelly turned next, followed by Queen Latifah and Riley, completing a huge four-chair turn. Riley was particularly impressed by how comfortable Amanda appeared, saying the moment felt less like an audition and more like watching an established performance.
Kelly’s reaction became more personal after hearing Amanda’s story. She revealed that she had also experienced sleeping in her car while trying to establish herself and praised Amanda for being willing to make sacrifices for her dream.
Kelly also told Amanda that her voice was different from other singers and encouraged her to recognize how special her natural tone was. It looked like she had a serious chance of convincing Amanda to join Team Kelly.
Queen Latifah praised Amanda’s voice as well, while Riley emphasized the polished quality of the performance. Adam, however, had noticed something else—the way Amanda’s voice seemed capable of making the entire room become quiet and pay attention.
That was when Adam decided he wasn’t going to risk losing her. Because he had been the first Coach to turn, he was eligible to use Season 30’s new First-In Button, a special advantage that can be used only once by a Coach during the season.
Adam pressed it, immediately securing Amanda for Team Adam before the normal four-Coach recruiting battle could play out. Kelly reacted playfully to being shut out, telling Adam, “I can’t stand you right now!”
The twist came afterward when Amanda revealed that Adam would actually have been her first choice anyway. So Adam used one of his most valuable advantages of the season to guarantee himself an Artist who was already leaning toward him—but there was no way he could have known that beforehand.
For Amanda, the night represented far more than another audition. After working multiple jobs, living out of her car and sacrificing comfort to continue pursuing music, she walked onto “The Voice,” earned one of the coveted four-chair turns and watched Adam use his one-time advantage specifically to make sure she joined his team.
