Army Sergeant Isaac Atkins Turns AGT Audition Into Golden Buzzer Breakthrough

Most viewers did not know Isaac Atkins before he stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage, but one performance changed that almost instantly.

Atkins, a U.S. Army sergeant known online as the “Singing Soldier,” appeared during Season 21 auditions and quickly became one of the night’s most talked-about contestants. His audition ended with Mel B hitting the Golden Buzzer, sending him straight to the live shows.

The 24-year-old singer is stationed on Oʻahu, Hawaii, and had to take leave from the Army to make the trip to California for his audition. For someone who once viewed the AGT stage as an almost unreachable dream, the moment felt like a major turning point.

Before the national spotlight, Atkins built his audience in a much simpler way: singing in his car. His videos earned him a growing TikTok following, where fans came to know him for his deep voice, old-school influences, and relaxed style.

Aloha State Daily reported that Atkins had around 85,000 TikTok followers before his AGT episode aired, while later reports noted that the number had climbed even higher after his Golden Buzzer moment.

His musical roots go back long before social media. Atkins has said his father introduced him to classic sounds from The Temptations, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Smokey Robinson, and the Motown era, music that shaped the way he learned to sing.

That influence followed him from Maine to the military. Atkins grew up in Lewiston, graduated from Lewiston High School, and later joined the Army after high school, eventually serving on active duty in Hawaii.

For his AGT audition, Atkins performed “Beggin’,” the song made famous by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and later revived for modern audiences by Måneskin. His version brought together grit, confidence, and the kind of tone that immediately caught the judges’ attention.

Mel B appeared impressed before he even began singing, reacting to his speaking voice and asking him to repeat his name. Once he performed, her reaction only grew stronger.

By the end of the audition, Mel B had made her decision. She hit the Golden Buzzer and praised him for the heart in his performance, giving Atkins one of the biggest early moments of the season.

Atkins later described the experience as overwhelming but encouraging. He said he could hear the crowd cheering even with his earpieces in, and that the audience energy helped push him through his nerves.

What made the moment stand out was that Atkins did not present himself like a polished industry act. He came across as someone who had spent years singing because he loved it, not because he had always expected a television breakthrough.

He has said singing was something he mostly did for himself, which made the AGT stage feel even bigger. Getting there, he explained, already felt like a victory because it meant his voice was finally being heard.

His Army community also played a part in the moment. Atkins told Aloha State Daily he planned to watch the episode with soldiers from his platoon on base, turning the audition into something shared with the people closest to his daily life.

Now, the “Singing Soldier” is no longer just a TikTok voice recording songs from a car. With one Golden Buzzer, Isaac Atkins has moved from military life and online clips to one of the biggest talent stages in the country, and fans are already waiting to see what he does next.
