The owner of HeeHaw, a beloved one-year-old miniature donkey, is pushing back against the explanation given by a Georgia police officer who fatally shot the animal during a search for a missing child. Hannah Israel says HeeHaw was not an aggressive animal and believes his behavior was being misunderstood.
According to Officer Trenton Garner’s report, officers and K-9 teams were following a trail during the overnight search when they encountered HeeHaw in a pasture. Garner wrote that the donkey began moving toward the officers, and an attempt to deter him with a Taser was unsuccessful before the officer fired.
Israel offers a very different perspective on what HeeHaw was likely doing. She says he was a highly socialized animal who had been bottle-raised in the family’s home and regularly interacted with people at petting zoos and nursing homes.
“He thought people were his family,” Israel told WSB-TV, emphasizing that HeeHaw was not an animal she considered capable of deliberately attacking someone. She said she would be extremely surprised if the donkey had been acting aggressively toward the officers.
Israel believes HeeHaw’s behavior was more consistent with a donkey reacting to unfamiliar people entering his surroundings. She has argued that he was simply alerting to strangers in his pasture, rather than deliberately trying to hurt anyone.
The incident happened around 12:45 a.m. while authorities were searching for a missing 12-year-old girl. The girl was later found safe farther along the search route, while HeeHaw was left dead in the pasture.
The circumstances remain disputed. Garner’s report says the donkey was charging toward the officers, while Israel maintains that HeeHaw had never demonstrated the kind of aggression described in the police account. Those competing accounts are now part of an investigation that has not yet reached a final conclusion.
There may also be additional evidence that could help clarify what happened. According to the police report, firefighters operating a drone during the search told officers they witnessed the encounter through the drone’s camera. It has not been established publicly what that recording shows.
Garner has been placed on administrative leave while the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Law Enforcement Division conducts an outside investigation. Officials have said the incident will be investigated thoroughly and impartially, and no final determination about the circumstances has been announced.
For Israel, the central question remains why her beloved donkey was considered such a serious threat. She is seeking access to the available evidence and says she wants accountability rather than harassment or threats toward anyone involved.
As the investigation continues, the full circumstances surrounding HeeHaw’s final encounter with the officers remain unresolved.
