Billy Schmidt’s Friends Remember His Final Goodbye as Philadelphia Mourns

Billy Schmidt’s friends gathered in the rain in South Philadelphia to remember the 22-year-old Penn State senior whose life was taken just steps from home. The memorial at 20th and Durfor became a place of grief, memories, and disbelief as the people who grew up with him tried to understand how a normal Friday night ended in tragedy.

Some of Billy’s friends had known him since kindergarten, while others had been by his side since first grade or middle school. These were not casual friendships. They were the kind of lifelong bonds built through childhood, school, neighborhood memories, and years of leaning on each other.

On Wednesday evening, they stood together near the spot where Billy was killed, surrounded by flowers and messages left in his memory. Even as rain fell, they stayed because that is what they had always done for one another. One friend said leaning on each other was all they did growing up, and now it is what they will keep doing.

Billy had spent Friday night watching the NBA Finals at a neighborhood bar with friends. It was supposed to be an ordinary night, filled with laughter, conversation, and the comfort of being around people who had known him for most of his life.

When the night ended, Billy said goodbye the way he always did. His friends remembered that he never left without a big hug and an “I love you.” That memory has now become one of the last things they are holding onto.

None of them knew it would be the final goodbye. Billy left the bar and began walking home, only a short distance from his family’s front door. But before he could make it there, police say two men approached him, took his phone, and the encounter turned deadly after he tried to get it back.

Philadelphia police later released surveillance footage showing two suspects moving through the neighborhood before the shooting. Investigators said the men were seen near 20th Street before the encounter and later fled toward 22nd and Porter after the shooting.

Police are now asking the public to study the footage and come forward with any information that could help identify the suspects. A reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction, and Billy’s friends say they want justice for what happened.

A vigil is planned in the neighborhood, and a funeral mass is scheduled for next week. For those who loved Billy, the days ahead will be filled with grief, but also with memories of a young man who was known for his warmth, loyalty, and the way he always made sure people knew he cared.

Billy Schmidt was a Penn State senior studying digital journalism and media, but to his friends, he was much more than that. He was someone they grew up with, someone they loved, and someone whose last goodbye will now stay with them forever.
