Carrie Underwood stepped far outside her country-music lane on September 19, making a surprise appearance with Guns N’ Roses during the band’s concert at Truist Park in Atlanta. The “American Idol” star joined Axl Rose onstage for two of the group’s most famous songs.
Underwood first appeared for “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” sharing vocals with Rose as the crowd watched the unexpected collaboration unfold. Dressed in a black tank top and leopard-print shorts, she looked completely at home alongside the legendary rock band.
She later returned to the stage for “Paradise City.” This time, Underwood leaned even further into the rock atmosphere, singing alongside Rose and enthusiastically headbanging as Guns N’ Roses powered through the classic.
While the Atlanta appearance surprised some fans, Underwood and Rose actually have a long history together. Underwood has repeatedly described Guns N’ Roses as one of her favorite bands and has credited Rose as an important influence on the way she approaches singing.
Their most memorable early collaboration happened at Stagecoach in 2022. During Underwood’s headlining performance, Rose unexpectedly walked onto the stage and joined her for “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City.”
Only a few months later, Underwood returned the favor. She joined Guns N’ Roses during the band’s concerts at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, once again performing “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City” with the group.
Their musical friendship continued in 2023 when Rose surprised the audience during Underwood’s “Denim & Rhinestones Tour” stop in Los Angeles. The pair delivered a powerful version of “Welcome to the Jungle,” adding another Guns N’ Roses classic to their growing list of collaborations.
The timing of the latest Atlanta reunion is particularly interesting. Reports surfaced just before the concert claiming Underwood has been experimenting with new rock-oriented music and receiving guidance from Rose as she explores a heavier sound.
Underwood has not announced a full rock album, so it would be premature to say she is abandoning country music. However, her recent performances make it increasingly clear that rock is becoming a much more visible part of her musical identity.
Earlier in September, she surprised the crowd at the Velocity Festival in Iowa by performing songs associated with Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Papa Roach and Collective Soul. She has also previously shared stages with rock acts including Mötley Crüe and Papa Roach.
Her love for Guns N’ Roses goes back much further than these recent performances. Underwood has said she has been a fan since she was extremely young and has praised Rose for using his voice differently depending on what each song requires.
For now, Underwood’s next musical direction remains an open question. But her Atlanta appearance offered another strong hint that her connection with rock music is becoming more than an occasional side project. Watching the country superstar trade vocals with Axl Rose on “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City” showed exactly why fans continue to wonder whether a full Carrie Underwood rock project could eventually become reality.
