Daughter Says She Had Finally Rebuilt Her Relationship With Her Father Before a Walmart Parking Lot Tragedy Changed Everything

For Amanda Diguglielmo, the grief of losing her father has been made even more painful by one heartbreaking reality: after years of estrangement, they had only recently found their way back to one another. Now, she says, the opportunity to continue rebuilding that relationship has been taken away forever following a fatal confrontation in a Florida Walmart parking lot.

Bart Diguglielmo, a 62-year-old retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant and former emergency room trauma nurse, died after being shot during a dispute outside a Walmart in North Lauderdale, Florida, on June 30. According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the confrontation began as an argument over a parking space. The woman involved remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators, and told deputies she acted in self-defense. No charges had been announced immediately as the investigation continued.

In an emotional television interview, Amanda described her father as “a good man” while acknowledging that, like anyone else, he was not perfect. Fighting back tears, she said no family should have to lose a loved one over what began as a disagreement in a parking lot. Her comments quickly resonated with viewers across the country who saw a daughter trying to preserve her father’s memory while navigating unimaginable loss.

Amanda also revealed something deeply personal that had not previously been widely known. She explained that she and her father had spent years apart before recently reconnecting and repairing their relationship. Although they had lost valuable time, she said they were grateful to have found each other again and had been looking forward to creating new memories together. That opportunity, she said, ended far too soon.

Speaking publicly was not an easy decision. Amanda admitted she initially hesitated because of the intense public attention surrounding the case. However, after seeing conflicting reports and speculation circulating online, she felt compelled to tell people who her father really was rather than allowing assumptions to define his legacy.

Among the rumors she specifically addressed were suggestions that her father had behaved inappropriately toward the woman before the shooting. Amanda firmly rejected those claims, saying she did not believe they reflected the man she knew. While recognizing that she could not speak to every moment of the confrontation, she said she wanted people to remember him for the life he lived rather than unverified narratives spreading online.

Family members have also highlighted Bart Diguglielmo’s years of public service. Before retiring, he served in the U.S. Army and later worked as an emergency room trauma nurse, dedicating much of his career to helping others during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Those who knew him have remembered him as someone who devoted himself to both his profession and his family.

Authorities say the shooting was captured on video recorded by witnesses in the parking lot. Investigators have reviewed multiple recordings as part of their effort to determine exactly how the confrontation unfolded. Because the woman claimed she acted in self-defense, detectives submitted the case to the Broward State Attorney’s Office for review before any decision on criminal charges would be made.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion about how quickly everyday disagreements can escalate into irreversible tragedies. What reportedly began as a dispute over a parking space ended with the loss of a husband, father, grandfather, military veteran, and healthcare professional, leaving two families forever affected by the events of a single afternoon.

As prosecutors continue reviewing the evidence, Amanda says her primary concern is not the public debate surrounding the case but ensuring that people remember the father she had only recently welcomed back into her life. She hopes others will see beyond the headlines and recognize the years of service, compassion, and love that defined much of his life.

For Amanda, the greatest heartbreak is not simply that her father is gone—it is that their second chance as a family had only just begun. After years spent apart, they had finally started rebuilding a relationship they both cherished. Now, she says, those plans have been replaced by memories, and by the hope that her father’s life will be remembered for far more than the tragic circumstances surrounding his final day.
