Kayleigh Mathews may have lost her first Battle on The Voice, but what happened seconds later proved that her Season 30 journey was far from finished.
The 31-year-old Tucson country singer found herself at the center of the season’s first major double Steal after Queen Latifah paired two of her strongest four-chair-turn artists against each other.
Kayleigh faced Lillie Kolich for a performance of Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush.”
It was a brutal pairing from the beginning.
Both women had convinced Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Riley Green and Queen Latifah to turn during their Blind Auditions, meaning Queen was knowingly sending two of Season 30’s most sought-after singers into the same Battle.
Helping Queen prepare the singers was legendary Battle advisor Patti LaBelle.
Patti encouraged both women to stop worrying about outperforming one another and instead concentrate on delivering the strongest individual performance they could inside the duet.
Queen saw very different strengths in each singer.
Kayleigh brought the powerful country-and-soul vocal quality that had originally made her Blind Audition feel almost spiritual to Queen.
Lillie, meanwhile, brought a distinctive tone and style that Queen described as having a flavor all its own.
Once they reached the Battle stage, the difficulty of Queen’s decision became obvious.
Kelly Clarkson was especially impressed.
She said she had heard “Girl Crush” performed many times before but considered Kayleigh and Lillie’s version one of her favorites.
Kelly praised Kayleigh’s huge presence and range while also acknowledging how strongly Lillie had affected her from the moment she began singing.
When pushed toward making a choice, Kelly leaned slightly toward Kayleigh.
Adam Levine saw things differently.
He felt the song naturally sat closer to Kayleigh’s musical world, which made Lillie’s ability to shine while stepping farther outside her usual lane particularly impressive.
Adam therefore leaned toward Lillie.
Riley Green, meanwhile, praised Kayleigh’s enormous voice and Lillie’s lower register while admitting that he didn’t envy Queen having to make the decision.
Then Queen had to choose.
She ultimately named Lillie Kolich the Battle winner.
Queen explained that one particularly special and unusual note from Lillie convinced her she needed to keep the singer moving forward on Team Queen.
For a moment, that appeared to put Kayleigh in danger of leaving the competition.
Then Kelly Clarkson hit her Steal button.
Before Kelly could enjoy the victory, Riley Green hit his button too.
Suddenly, instead of going home, Kayleigh once again had multiple superstar coaches fighting to work with her.
Kelly immediately reminded Kayleigh of something important.
She had been the first coach to press the Steal, emphasizing that the instant Queen chose Lillie, Kelly was ready to rescue Kayleigh.
Kelly also leaned on her enormous Voice experience.
She reminded Kayleigh that she has won the competition before and argued that she knows how to guide an artist through the strategic decisions that become increasingly important as the season progresses.
But Riley had been waiting for another opportunity.
During Kayleigh’s Blind Audition, he had fought hard to land her after hearing her perform Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name.”
Kayleigh surprised him by choosing Queen Latifah instead.
Now, after only one Battle, Riley unexpectedly had another chance to bring the country singer onto his team.
He reminded Kayleigh that he had been a fan from the very beginning and joked about all the tricks — including his now-famous duck-call antics — he had used trying to recruit her during the Blinds.
Then Riley made the competitive part of his pitch clear:
He wanted Kayleigh on Team Riley because he believed they could win The Voice together.
The moment also highlights just how dramatically Kayleigh’s position changed in a matter of seconds.
She went from being one of Queen Latifah’s prized four-chair turns…
to losing her first Battle…
to suddenly having two coaches fighting over her again.
And it wasn’t the first time.
During her Blind Audition, all four coaches wanted Kayleigh after her Vince Gill performance.
Despite being a country singer and having Riley Green sitting directly in front of her, she shocked everyone by following her gut and choosing Queen Latifah.
Now she faces another major decision.
Does she finally join the country coach who wanted her from the beginning?
Or does she choose Kelly Clarkson, who pushed her Steal button first and openly said during the Battle that she favored Kayleigh?
That answer became the cliffhanger.
The October 12 episode ended before Kayleigh revealed which coach she would choose, with the decision scheduled to continue during the October 13 Battle episode.
Whatever her choice, one thing has already become clear.
Queen Latifah may have selected Lillie Kolich as the winner of the Battle.
But Kayleigh Mathews walked away from “Girl Crush” with something almost as powerful:
two coaches immediately fighting to keep her in the competition.
