Elena Katherine Moore’s disappearance has taken a devastating turn after authorities confirmed that the 39-year-old South Carolina personal trainer was found dead following a days-long search.
Moore had last been seen on June 11 after leaving a Planet Fitness in Lexington, South Carolina. Police said she was seen walking away from the gym toward a wooded area behind a nearby Lowe’s Home Improvement store.
Her husband reported her missing the next day, June 12, and investigators quickly described the disappearance as very out of character. Moore worked as a personal trainer at Wolf’s Fitness Center and was known by friends and clients as active, social, and connected to her community.
At first, police searched the wooded area near the gym using officers, drones, and support from multiple agencies. Lexington Police said the June 15 search was not a recovery operation, but an effort to rule out one more area where Moore might have been.
Days later, the case changed when investigators received a tip that led them to a wooded area. A body was found wearing clothing matching the outfit Moore had last been seen in: an olive-green zip-up hoodie and black athletic pants.
Authorities later confirmed the remains were Moore’s, but the cause of death has not yet been publicly released. Officials said an autopsy was scheduled as investigators continued working to determine what happened.
The discovery has only deepened questions because friends say Moore had been acting unlike herself before she disappeared. Reports say surveillance and doorbell camera footage showed her appearing confused or unusual in the days leading up to June 11.
One resident said Moore was seen behaving strangely around food deliveries and packages at an apartment complex. Those moments have become part of the wider timeline investigators are now reviewing.
Friends also noticed another warning sign: Moore had gone quiet on social media, something they said was not normal for her. To those who knew her, the sudden silence added to the fear that something was wrong.
One of the most troubling claims has come from Moore’s close friend, Sondra Campbell, who said Moore had recently expressed fear and asked to speak privately. Campbell told reporters that Moore seemed frightened in their final conversations.
Campbell has also pushed back against one painful possibility being discussed online, saying she does not believe Moore would have intentionally harmed herself. Authorities, however, have not announced a final cause or manner of death.
Police have also addressed speculation about Moore’s husband, Brannon Slice. Reports say officials stated he is not currently considered a person of interest as the investigation continues.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has become involved in the case, adding state-level resources to the investigation. That involvement has fueled more public interest as people wait for official answers.
For now, investigators have not publicly said whether foul play is suspected. Earlier in the search, police said they did not have evidence pointing that way, but the case remains active while the autopsy and evidence review continue.
Elena Katherine Moore’s loved ones are now left grieving while waiting for answers. What began as a missing person case after a routine gym visit has become a painful mystery involving troubling final behavior, unanswered questions, and a community hoping investigators can explain what really happened.
