Carly Pearce and Jelly Roll came together for an unforgettable performance of “9 to 5” as the Grand Ole Opry honored Dolly Parton with a special celebration of her life and music on August 29.
The sold-out Nashville show brought together artists from several generations of country music, all paying tribute to Dolly just days after her p/a/ssing at age 80. The evening was filled with familiar songs, personal memories and emotional moments.
One of the biggest surprises came when Jelly Roll appeared onstage to join Carly Pearce and the other performers for “9 to 5,” one of the songs most closely associated with Dolly’s remarkable career.
Pearce’s involvement carried special meaning because her connection to Dolly went back years. Before becoming a country star herself, Carly performed at Dollywood, and Dolly later played an important role in welcoming her into the Grand Ole Opry family.
As the familiar “9 to 5” melody filled the Opry House, the mood shifted from grief toward celebration. Instead of treating the song like a quiet farewell, the performers embraced the energy and personality that had always made Dolly’s music so recognizable.
Seeing Pearce and Jelly Roll together also highlighted just how widely Dolly’s influence stretched. They represent very different paths through modern country music, yet both stood on the same legendary stage celebrating an artist whose music helped shape generations.
The performance came near the end of a night that also featured Kathy Mattea, Molly Tuttle, Dan Tyminski, Channing Wilson, T. Graham Brown, Ketch Secor and Dolly’s niece Jada Star, among others.
Jada delivered one of the evening’s most personal moments when she performed “The Orchard,” a song she had recorded with her aunt. Her appearance reminded everyone that behind the country music icon being celebrated was also a deeply loved member of the Parton family.
The Opry itself held enormous significance in Dolly’s story. She first stepped onto its stage in 1959 at only 13 years old, earning three encores, and officially became an Opry member a decade later.
That made hearing “9 to 5” performed on the same stage more than six decades later especially meaningful. The young Tennessee singer who once arrived at the Opry with enormous dreams had eventually become one of the most influential entertainers country music had ever produced.
But even the energetic group performance wasn’t the final emotional moment. As the evening came to a close, performers gathered together while footage of Dolly singing “I Will Always Love You” played, allowing Dolly’s own voice to have the final word in a night dedicated to her memory.
For Carly Pearce, Jelly Roll and everyone standing beside them, “9 to 5” became more than one of Dolly Parton’s biggest hits that night. It became a celebration of the woman behind it — and one final reminder that although Dolly was no longer standing on the Opry stage herself, the music she left behind could still bring the entire room together.
