Jackson Olson and Emma Slater delivered their strongest-scoring Dancing With the Stars routine yet on Mariah Carey Night.
But one brief moment from their Waltz has become almost as talked about as the dance itself.
Jackson and Emma performed to Mariah Carey’s “Without You,” earning three 7s for 21 out of 30 — their highest score of Season 35 so far.
Bruno Tonioli praised Jackson for finally appearing more connected to the music, Carrie Ann Inaba celebrated seeing him embrace the dancing, and Derek Hough said there was “so much good” in the performance.
Yet viewers noticed something the judges never mentioned.
During one dramatic move, Emma launched herself toward Jackson as he caught her low to the floor.
For a split second, the position looked unstable enough that some viewers wondered whether Jackson had nearly dropped his professional partner.
But none of the three judges brought it up.
Carrie Ann, Derek and Bruno simply continued their critiques before giving Jackson and Emma matching 7s.
That silence immediately sparked questions online.
Some viewers wondered how such a visible moment could pass without criticism when contestants are regularly marked down for far smaller technical mistakes.
Then fans noticed the timing.
Only days after the October 6 DWTS episode, Jackson was scheduled to compete in the Banana Bowl championship on October 10 with the Savannah Bananas.
Emma and members of the DWTS troupe were also expected to participate in the event.
That produced a much bigger theory.
Some fans began speculating that the judges deliberately avoided criticizing the moment — or that the show wanted Jackson to survive elimination — because losing him immediately before the championship could complicate the planned crossover appearance.
It certainly made for an intriguing theory.
But there is an important problem with it:
There is no evidence that happened.
No judge, producer or ABC representative has indicated that Jackson received special treatment because of the Banana Bowl.
And a closer look at the dance suggests something far less dramatic may explain what viewers saw.
Photos from Jackson and Emma’s rehearsals show the pair practicing essentially the same unusual catch, meaning Emma’s movement toward the floor was part of the choreography rather than an unexpected fall.
The live execution may simply have looked rougher.
One analysis noted that Jackson appeared slightly farther back during the televised performance than during rehearsals, which could explain why the move briefly looked like a near-drop.
Emma was still caught.
The routine continued.
And neither dancer appeared to treat the moment as an accident afterward.
There is even precedent for the unusual movement.
A similar low-catching move has appeared in previous DWTS choreography, including a routine involving Derek Hough and Bindi Irwin.
That makes it much more likely Jackson and Emma were attempting a difficult planned element rather than recovering from a genuine mistake.
Still, the controversy arrived at an awkward moment for Jackson.
He had already spent the week dealing with backlash over a deleted social-media comment about fellow contestant Guillermo Rodriguez.
Jackson later publicly apologized, and the two appeared together in a lighthearted video indicating they had moved past the issue.
Then came Mariah Carey Night.
Jackson improved to 21 points, but he was still named among the final couples awaiting the result before Ciara Miller and Brandon Armstrong were ultimately eliminated.
That combination — the apparent near-drop, the judges saying nothing about it, Jackson surviving elimination and the Banana Bowl arriving only days later — gave fans plenty to analyze.
But the most dramatic explanation currently remains only speculation.
The available evidence suggests Emma’s leap was planned, even if the execution looked slightly uncomfortable in the live performance.
So did Jackson Olson nearly drop Emma Slater?
Probably not.
Did the strange-looking moment happen at exactly the right time to create another DWTS conspiracy theory?
Absolutely.
