Fresh off his history-making win on American Idol Season 23, Jamal Roberts has returned to his roots in Meridian, Mississippi—welcomed like a hometown hero. But while the celebrations are in full swing, there’s one surprise no one saw coming: he still hasn’t received his $250,000 prize.
“We’re having a welcome home celebration for me,” Roberts shared, “but this time, it’s without the cameras and chaos—just family, love, and community.”
Roberts captured America’s heart—and a record-breaking 26 million votes—with his powerhouse vocals and heartfelt performances. But despite taking the crown, the 2025 Idol champion admits the reality of it all still hasn’t fully sunk in.
“It was trying, it was difficult. Every round came with its own set of challenges,” he said during an interview with Twin States News. “You had to push through with faith and perseverance. I don’t know where your faith is, but mine is grounded in God.”
Back in Meridian, Roberts is still adjusting to the instant fame.
“I went to the cleaners the other day, and people just started surrounding me,” he laughed. “I was in a hurry, but it’s all love. I love my people. I’m glad to be back home.”
Still, amid the warm welcome and autograph requests, one important question remains unanswered: Where’s the prize money?

As of now, Roberts has not yet received the $250,000 prize promised to the American Idol winner. While no official statement has been made about the delay, it’s a surprising revelation for fans who watched his journey unfold on national television.
Yet even without the check in hand, Jamal is using his platform for something even bigger.
“It shows that the kids are listening,” he said. “When it’s worth something, they’ll pay attention. So let’s get in our kids’ ears, let’s get in their faces, and let’s push them to be great.”
Roberts will be giving back in the best way he knows how—through music. Fans can catch him live at Q.V. Sykes Park this Saturday at 6 p.m. It’s a moment he hopes will not only celebrate his victory, but also inspire the next generation of dreamers from his hometown.
