The heartbreaking story of HeeHaw, a one-year-old miniature donkey beloved by a Georgia family, has taken another turn after a newly released police report detailed the officer’s account of what happened during a late-night search for a missing child. The explanation has only added to the questions surrounding the animal’s death.
HeeHaw was living at Elsberry Riding & Farm in Rockmart, Georgia, where owner Hannah Israel said he had been bottle-raised and was deeply loved by the family. He was also accustomed to being around people through petting-zoo appearances and other community activities.
The incident happened around 12:45 a.m. on August 30, when officers were searching the property and surrounding area for a missing 12-year-old girl. A K-9 team and bloodhound team were following a trail that led through the woods and into a pasture, with a drone team also assisting the search.
According to Officer Trenton Garner’s report, the officers encountered horses near a fence line before noticing HeeHaw farther up a hill. Garner said the donkey then moved toward the officers, which he interpreted as a threat.
The report says an attempt was made to discourage HeeHaw from approaching, but Garner stated that it did not stop the animal. He then made the decision that resulted in HeeHaw being killed. The details of that encounter are now part of an outside investigation.
The missing girl was eventually found safe at a church farther down the road. While the search ended successfully, the death of HeeHaw immediately became the focus of intense public attention.
For Israel, the official account is difficult to reconcile with the donkey she knew. She told investigators that HeeHaw had never behaved aggressively toward people and said he was extremely well socialized.
She has also questioned why the animal was considered such a serious threat, particularly because HeeHaw was accustomed to people and had been raised around the family. Israel has said she wants to see the available video evidence and is seeking accountability.
