During Sunday night’s deeply emotional American Idol episode themed around Mother’s Day and Disney classics, Jamal Roberts stood out with a powerful tribute to his late stepmother, Tabitha. Choosing Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” — her favorite song — Roberts delivered a soul-stirring performance that visibly moved both the audience and the judges.
“She was the one that always supported my music,” Roberts shared before taking the stage. “She always told me I would do great things — she’s the reason why I’m here.” Tabitha, who passed away five years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic, played a central role in encouraging Roberts to pursue music, and his performance was a poignant homage to her enduring influence.
His rendition of the iconic civil rights anthem received glowing praise. Luke Bryan remarked that it had “been a minute” since Roberts had returned to his R&B roots and commended his timing and emotional precision. Lionel Richie was especially awed, joking, “I want to see your birth certificate, son,” adding that Roberts sang with a depth well beyond his years.
In addition to the tribute, Roberts also performed “Go the Distance” from Disney’s Hercules earlier in the show. His dual performances — blending heartfelt R&B with uplifting Disney optimism — helped secure his spot in the Top 5.
He’ll return Monday night alongside fellow finalists John Foster, Slater Nalley, Breanna Nix, and Thunderstorm Artis for a second Disney-themed round, where each contestant will perform songs inspired by their favorite heroes and villains. With just one week left until the live finale on Sunday, May 18, Roberts remains a front-runner — not only for his voice but for the heart and history behind every performance.
