Just weeks before his stunning victory on American Idol Season 23, Jamal Roberts was leading a high-energy performance at Crestwood Elementary, singing and dancing alongside his students. Few in the room knew that this beloved physical education teacher was just a short time away from becoming a national singing sensation.
During his American Idol journey, Roberts made a heartfelt return to his hometown as part of a special American Idol hometown concert. On May 14, 2025, he surprised a lunchroom full of Crestwood Elementary students — many of whom burst into tears and ran to hug their “Coach Jamal” after seeing him again. Roberts shared inspiring words with the children, encouraging them to remember the lessons of hard work, motivation, and sportsmanship he had taught them.
“That day, I told the kids, ‘If you work hard, good things will always come out of it,’” Roberts said. “I wanted them to know that no matter what happens, I’m still going to be their coach.” The visit was part of a weekend of hometown celebrations, including a parade and a concert at Meridian City Hall, which drew a crowd of over 20,000 supporters.
After winning American Idol on May 18, Roberts was immediately swept into a whirlwind of national media appearances, including performances on Good Morning America and guest spots on Live with Kelly & Mark. Despite his rapidly growing music career and the success of his single “Heal,” Roberts was eager to return to his roots.
In the days following his victory, Roberts announced he would be returning to Crestwood Elementary — not as a full-time teacher, but as a committed mentor and supporter. A recent Facebook Live video showed him back on “bus duty,” guiding students safely after school and reconnecting with staff and children who affectionately call him “Coach Jamal.”
“I wasn’t really doing the teaching thing for the money,” Roberts told USA Today. “It was really the kids, who are just my inspiration. Even if I can’t teach full-time anymore, I want to come back every now and then, show up, and be part of something.”
Roberts’ deep bond with his community is clear as he balances his rising stardom with his role as a mentor and father. Alongside his professional commitments — including upcoming concerts at CMA Fest in Nashville and a sold-out show at Morgan Freeman’s Ground Zero Blues Club — Roberts remains rooted in Meridian, where he shares his success with family, friends, and the children he inspires every day.
