Jasmine Crockett Faces Backlash After Comments on Karmelo Anthony Case

Rep. Jasmine Crockett is facing criticism after comments she made about the Karmelo Anthony case sparked a new round of debate online. The Texas Democrat discussed Anthony’s murder conviction on her podcast, “Clock It with Crockett,” and several of her remarks quickly drew backlash from people who said she misrepresented key details from the trial.

Anthony, now 19, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. The case had already divided the public over self-defense, race, school safety, and whether the jury reached the right decision.

During the podcast discussion, Crockett appeared to question the size and nature of the knife used in the stabbing. She held her fingers close together while discussing the weapon and suggested that, based on size alone, someone might not immediately think of it as a deadly weapon.

That comment became one of the most criticized parts of the episode. Trial testimony described the weapon as a folding knife, and medical testimony showed that the wound was fatal. Critics argued that the size of a weapon matters far less than the way it was used and the result it caused.

Crockett also drew attention for a comment about self-defense. While discussing a hypothetical situation, she said that if a much larger man were on top of her and attacking her, she would not be limited to using only her fists. Critics said the problem with that example was that it did not match the testimony presented in court.

During the trial, witnesses said the confrontation began after Metcalf and others asked Anthony to leave a team tent area. Testimony described a shove before Anthony pulled out the knife and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest, but reports do not show that Metcalf was on top of Anthony or beating him in the way Crockett’s hypothetical described.

Clips of Crockett’s comments spread quickly across social media, where users accused her of downplaying the seriousness of the stabbing and speaking without fully matching the trial record. Some people said her remarks were especially painful because Austin Metcalf’s family had just gone through the verdict, sentencing, and victim impact statements.

Supporters of Crockett’s broader point argued that she was discussing self-defense law and the way public narratives form around criminal cases. But even some who agreed that criminal cases can be complicated said her wording gave critics an opening because it seemed to minimize important facts from the courtroom.

The controversy also comes as Anthony’s supporters continue to challenge the verdict online, while others point back to the jury’s decision. Jurors heard the testimony, rejected Anthony’s self-defense claim, and later sentenced him to 35 years in prison.

Now Crockett’s remarks have become the latest flashpoint in a case that has not stopped generating public reaction. For Austin Metcalf’s family, the legal outcome has already been decided in court, but the arguments outside the courtroom continue to grow louder as political voices, online critics, and supporters keep debating what the case means.
