John Foster Hits Hawaii with a Smile and Southern Soul, Igniting the Stage with Garth Brooks’ “Callin’ Baton Rouge”

In just five short weeks, American Idol will crown its next champion, but until then, the pressure is on as weekly eliminations continue based on America’s votes. Season 23’s Top 24 took the stage at Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii across two nights, hoping to earn enough viewer support to secure a spot in the coveted Top 20.

Sunday’s episode showcased standout performances from contestants like Breanna Nix, Jamal Roberts, and Baylee Littrell. But it was Monday night that saw country’s last hope, John Foster, step up to the mic with a performance that had the judges cheering—and fans taking notice.

Foster, the only true country act left in the competition, hails from Addis, Louisiana, and made his mark early on with a traditional country sound. His audition—featuring Alan Jackson’s “Don’t Rock The Jukebox”—left Carrie Underwood unsure of his vocal potential. She challenged him to show more soul, prompting him to sing Conway Twitty’s “Goodbye Time,” a move that ultimately secured his place in Hollywood.

Although some initially questioned whether Foster’s soft-spoken style could hold up in a competition full of powerhouse vocalists, the 18-year-old medical student proved his staying power through Hollywood Week, where he made it through two intense rounds of cuts, shrinking the field from 144 to 24.

This week in Hawaii, Foster turned up the energy with a lively performance of Garth Brooks’ fan-favorite, “Callin’ Baton Rouge.” His Southern charm was on full display, and the judges took notice.

“That was a Hawaiian hoedown,” Luke Bryan said with a laugh. “It really complimented who you are as an artist. You’re a Louisiana boy singing songs that speak that. It was great. It was perfect. One of my favorite performances you’ve done.”

Lionel Richie echoed the sentiment, praising Foster’s song choice and his ability to light up the stage with authentic energy.

With his unmistakable country tone, humble presence, and consistent growth each week, Foster is fast becoming a fan favorite. As the live shows continue and the Top 20 becomes Top 10 and beyond, Foster’s blend of traditional country sound and genuine storytelling is setting him apart.

Tune in next Sunday on ABC to watch the Top 20 compete—and vote live—to see who will keep their dream alive on the road to becoming the next American Idol.
