John Foster may have finished second on American Idol Season 23, but his country music career is already reaching firsts that many artists only dream of.

Fresh off his emotional run on Idol, the 18-year-old Louisiana native is headed to one of the most iconic stages in country music. Foster will make his Grand Ole Opry debut on Saturday, June 7, marking a major milestone in his rapidly rising career.

He announced the news on May 24 via Instagram, following a surprise performance with country star and Opry member Craig Morgan.

“Tonight I had the pleasure of singing with Grand Ole Opry member Craig Morgan, and I’m incredibly honored to announce that I will make my Opry debut on Saturday, June 7th!” Foster wrote. “This has been my #1 dream ever since I started music… Glory be to God!”

Foster, who described himself as an “amateur country music historian,” said he teared up the first time he visited the Grand Ole Opry as a fan. Now, he’s stepping onto that very stage as a performer—a full-circle moment rooted in passion and perseverance.

From Hometown Hopeful to National Star

A college student from Addis, Louisiana, Foster entered American Idol Season 23 with hopes of making it past the auditions. He ended up making it all the way to the finale, impressing judges and audiences alike with his heartfelt vocals, Southern charm, and strong faith.

Throughout the season, Foster shared the stage with major stars like Miranda Lambert, CeCe Winans, Jelly Roll, and even Idol judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie. One of his standout moments came during the finale, when he and Bryan performed a soulful duet of Randy Travis’ “Deeper Than the Holler.”

“Man, what a true blessing to share this Idol stage with so many incredible heroes,” Foster wrote after the finale. “I’m beyond thankful, and I can’t wait to keep making music for y’all as long as the good Lord lets me.”

A Big Week in Music City

Foster’s Opry debut is part of a whirlwind week in Nashville. On Wednesday, June 4, just three days before his solo Opry set, Foster will join Idol winner Jamal Roberts, finalist Breanna Nix, and other fan favorites in a free, all-ages concert in downtown Nashville, hosted by 19 Recordings and BMG. The show will take place at 4 p.m. ET on the corner of 6th Avenue & Peabody Street.

“This will be my first ‘official’ appearance in Music City, which is quite the milestone!” Foster shared.

More Than Music: A Mission from the Heart

While Foster’s star continues to rise in country music, he remains deeply connected to his roots. In the days following Idol, he announced plans to use his $100,000 prize money to open a homeless shelter for elderly residents in his hometown—a project already underway and receiving national attention.

From emotional ballads like “Tell That Angel I Love Her” to his ongoing advocacy for the elderly and underserved, Foster is showing that success is not just about chart positions—it’s about purpose.

A Voice—and Heart—that Country Music Needs

As Foster prepares to take the Grand Ole Opry stage, it’s clear that his journey is only just beginning. He’s already proven he can hold his own with legends, captivate a national audience, and give back in meaningful ways. Now, with the Opry’s circle beneath his boots and a guitar in hand, he’s ready to step into the next chapter of what’s shaping up to be a defining career in country music.
