Eighteen-year-old John Foster has quickly become a fan favorite on Season 23 of American Idol, but fans may be surprised to learn that “Foster” isn’t actually his last name. The rising country singer from Addis, Louisiana, was born John Foster Benoit — and his hometown is proud to set the record straight.
Foster dropped “Benoit” for simplicity as his music career took off, but he honored his roots in his audition by bringing coolers packed with Cajun favorites from his family’s shop, Benoit’s Country Meat Block, to the judges. According to family friend Rick Bourgoyne, “He’s the third John Foster Benoit — just like his daddy and grandpa.”
As Foster’s fame grows, he’s also trying to correct misinformation. On April 30, he took to Facebook to clear up a few things: he’s 18 (not 24), from Louisiana (not Kentucky), and — despite comparisons — has no connection to Dwight Yoakam or a record label.
“I’ve never even been to Kentucky,” Foster joked, adding, “I hope to visit someday.”
Off-stage, Foster’s ambitions go far beyond music. He’s studying biology at LSU and still plans to become an oncologist. In fact, he recently launched a Facebook fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, raising nearly $3,500 in under 24 hours — far surpassing his $500 goal.
Whether he’s pursuing a music career or medicine, one thing is clear: Foster’s passion, humility, and strong sense of purpose are resonating far beyond the Idol stage. With his family, faith, and fans behind him, John Foster Benoit is making Louisiana proud — and America’s watching.
