John Foster Shuts Down Idol Rumors—and Reveals the Randy Travis Message That Changed His Life

John Foster

From humble beginnings in Addis, Louisiana, to the bright lights of Hollywood, 18-year-old American Idol finalist John Foster is living out a dream — one he’s navigating with remarkable maturity, deep faith, and a strong sense of purpose.

In a recent interview from Los Angeles, just days before the Top 3 are announced on Monday night’s live show, the LSU freshman opened up about his whirlwind journey, the challenges of sudden fame, and his determination to stay grounded amidst the excitement.

“American Idol Is Rocket Fuel”

Foster’s rise has been swift and undeniable. A few short months ago, he was playing local gigs and attending college classes. Now, he’s preparing multiple live performances a week, attending wardrobe fittings, meeting music legends, and watching his fan base explode.

“Somebody said one time that American Idol is rocket fuel, and I think that’s a perfect analogy,” Foster said. “I went from 5,000 to 200,000 followers on Facebook…within two months. That’s absolutely incredible.”

The young country artist even recalled being recognized in Disneyland — something he never imagined would happen outside his home state. But while fame has arrived quickly, Foster remains focused on what matters most.

“I’ve had to make sure that I’m staying centered on myself and my faith and knowing that I have a purpose here,” he said. “That’s what’s keeping me straight.”

A Day in the Life of a Finalist

Foster offered a glimpse into his hectic schedule. Days begin at 8 a.m. at Red Studios and are packed with vocal rehearsals, coaching sessions, and wardrobe changes. Evenings are his only free time to catch up on social media and connect with fans.

Despite the grueling schedule, Foster says he’s soaking it all in — and staying true to his identity. His signature cowboy hat, for example, is here to stay.

“I’ve had that hat on for—gonna be three years in July—every single performance. So there’s no way I can go on that stage without it,” he said.

Using His Platform for Good

In addition to performing, Foster recently launched a Facebook fundraiser for the American Cancer Society — a cause close to his heart, given that several family members are currently battling cancer. The campaign, which also offered signed photos in exchange for donations, has raised over $5,300.

“It warms my heart to know that people support me and in return we can support those that really need it,” Foster said.

Setting the Record Straight

With his rapid rise, rumors have followed — including claims that he’s signed a record deal or topped the Billboard charts. Foster set the record straight:

“I am not signed to or affiliated with any record label… I did like do some waves on the iTunes country charts, but that was the extent of that, unfortunately.”

Country Icons & Career Aspirations

Foster has already caught the attention of country music royalty. Randy Travis personally messaged him on Instagram, and Foster has worked with several big names through Idol, including Miranda Lambert, Josh Groban, Jelly Roll, and James Taylor.

“To meet people who are in the shoes that I hope to be in one day — and to feel their authenticity — is comforting,” he shared. “Josh Groban gave me some really good tips about anxiety. To know they deal with that too is comforting.”

Personal Life & Public Love

Viewers recently met Foster’s girlfriend, Brooklyn Bourque, on the show. Her family’s long-standing connection to Idol made the moment especially meaningful.

“She and her family have been watching American Idol since she was born. Her dad remembers watching Carrie [Underwood] win. So for her to be on the show — that was really cool.”

Comparisons to George Strait

Many fans and viewers have started comparing Foster to the King of Country himself — George Strait. It’s a comparison Foster doesn’t take lightly.

“He’s the absolute king. I’ve based a lot of my vocal and performance style around him… even the slightest mention of him near my name is an honor in itself.”

With his mix of talent, authenticity, and humility, John Foster has proven himself a fan favorite on American Idol Season 23. As he prepares for Monday’s Top 3 showdown, the young star remains focused on what brought him this far — faith, family, and a love for country music.
