Kayleigh Mathews delivered one of the biggest moments of The Voice Season 30 Blind Auditions when her powerful country performance convinced Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Riley Green and Queen Latifah to all turn their chairs.
The 31-year-old singer from Tucson, Arizona, stepped onto the stage with Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name,” an ambitious song that immediately showed the coaches exactly what kind of vocalist was standing behind them.
Kayleigh barely had time to settle into the performance before the coaches began reacting. Her distinctive country tone, control and ability to stretch the emotional notes quickly caught their attention, and all four chairs eventually faced the stage.
The most impressive part was how early it happened. Kayleigh had managed to secure the rare four-chair turn before she even reached the song’s chorus, turning what began as another Blind Audition into one of the night’s biggest coach battles.
Adam Levine immediately made it clear that he wasn’t going to surrender simply because Riley Green was the obvious country coach. Adam told Kayleigh that he was prepared to fight extremely hard to get her onto his team.
Adam argued that while Riley lives in the country music world outside the competition, his own experience on The Voice could give Kayleigh an advantage as the competition became more strategic. He also praised the way her voice filled the room and called her an exceptional talent.
Queen Latifah approached Kayleigh from a completely different direction. She said the performance had become almost spiritual for her, explaining that Kayleigh’s voice had taken her “to church” and made her feel an emotional connection to the song.
Queen also told Kayleigh that she believed she could help her find songs capable of bringing out even more of the beauty and emotion in her voice as the competition continued.
Then Riley Green made his case. As a country singer himself, Riley immediately understood the difficulty of taking on a Vince Gill song and praised Kayleigh for successfully handling material associated with one of country music’s most respected vocalists.
Riley said the performance reminded him of the music he grew up hearing in Alabama. He explained that he could close his eyes during Kayleigh’s audition and feel as though he had been transported back home, making his pitch especially personal.
Kelly Clarkson had country credentials of her own to bring into the fight. She pointed out that she had previously recorded “Don’t Rush” with Vince Gill and said she recognized influences from singers including Patty Loveless and LeAnn Rimes in Kayleigh’s voice.
Kelly explained that performances capable of emotionally moving her are exactly why she returned to The Voice, making it clear that she wanted the opportunity to work with Kayleigh rather than simply watching another coach take her.
The battle became even more entertaining when Riley attempted to silence Adam by having a duck blind brought onto the stage and placed in front of him. Adam simply walked around it and continued making his pitch, while even host Carson Daly joined in on the joke.
When Adam finally asked Kayleigh whether country music was truly where her heart lived, she gave an answer that made her potential choice even harder to predict. Kayleigh explained that country was where her love of music began, but added that there was also plenty of soul in what she wanted to do.
Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for. Kayleigh said she needed to follow her “heart and gut” and began announcing which superstar she wanted as her coach — only for the episode to end before viewers heard the name. Instead of immediately revealing which coach had won one of the season’s most sought-after four-chair singers, The Voice left Kayleigh’s decision as a cliffhanger heading into the final night of Blind Auditions.
