Joe Henley may only be 19 years old, but his first appearance on “The Voice” Season 30 already has viewers talking about how far the young country singer could go. His Blind Audition of Travis Tritt’s “Anymore” earned immediate attention from Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green.
Henley, from Grand Bay, Alabama, grew up singing in his grandparents’ traveling church and developed a love for traditional country music. Remarkably, his appearance on “The Voice” was described as his first real gig, making his confident performance on such a large stage even more notable.
Before walking onto the stage, Henley had a very specific hope. He wanted both Clarkson and Green to turn so he could watch the veteran Coach battle the country newcomer for him. That is almost exactly what happened.
As Henley began singing “Anymore,” Clarkson and Green quickly recognized something they liked and turned their chairs. His unusually deep country voice immediately became one of the defining features of the audition.
Clarkson knew she had a difficult recruiting battle ahead of her. She reminded Henley that she has previously won “The Voice” with country Artists and argued that joining her could allow him to stand out instead of competing with several country singers on Green’s team.
But Henley clearly had a strong connection with Green. When the Coaches asked about his musical influences, he mentioned traditional-country favorites including Keith Whitley, Don Williams and George Strait before revealing that Green was also one of the Artists he admired.
Then came the moment that made Henley’s audition even more memorable. After learning that Green’s “My Way” was Henley’s favorite song, Green walked onto the stage with his guitar and performed part of the song alongside him.
At that point, Clarkson seemed to realize exactly where the teenager was leaning. Henley eventually told her that he loved her but announced that he was choosing Team Riley, giving the rookie Coach another promising country singer.
Clarkson might have lost the recruiting battle, but what she said afterward was arguably an even bigger compliment. Turning to Green, she said of Henley, “He could win you The Voice.”
Viewers also responded enthusiastically to Henley’s traditional sound, with some online reactions highlighted in coverage comparing his deep voice to the classic country style of Randy Travis. His old-school approach stood out during a premiere featuring singers from several different musical backgrounds.
Green certainly appears convinced that country music could have a major season. After securing Henley, he explained that his strategy is to collect strong country Artists because he believes a country singer has a genuine opportunity to take the competition this year.
Henley therefore leaves his first “Voice” appearance with far more than a place on Team Riley. He earned two quick chair turns, performed alongside one of his favorite country singers and received a remarkable early prediction from Clarkson. Whether he can live up to that prediction remains to be seen, but his rendition of “Anymore” has already made the 19-year-old one of Season 30’s young country Artists to watch.
