“The Voice” Season 30 coaching lineup has come together for its first special performance, and Kelly Clarkson’s powerhouse vocals are already generating plenty of attention. Clarkson joined Adam Levine, Queen Latifah and Riley Green for a soulful rendition of The Band’s classic “The Weight.”
The performance continues a longtime “Voice” tradition of bringing the Coaches together onstage. This year’s lineup is especially interesting because it combines four performers with very different musical backgrounds, ranging from pop and rock to country, hip-hop and soul.
Riley Green helps set the mood by playing acoustic guitar, giving the 1968 classic a relaxed country influence. The country star eventually takes his own verse and brings his recognizable Southern style to the performance.
Adam Levine shows another side of his musicianship by sitting behind the drum kit. The Maroon 5 frontman handles the opening verse while playing drums before the other Coaches gradually join him.
When the chorus arrives, all four voices come together. Their different vocal styles create a distinctive harmony and provide an early demonstration of the musical chemistry viewers can expect from the new coaching panel.
Queen Latifah then receives her opportunity to take center stage. Drawing on decades of experience across hip-hop, soul and other styles, she gives her section a warm and confident delivery before passing the spotlight to her fellow Coaches.
But Clarkson produces one of the performance’s biggest moments. Singing barefoot and visibly enjoying herself, she brings her familiar soulful power to the song and pushes the arrangement toward its dramatic conclusion.
Behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage shows Clarkson moving around the stage barefoot and jumping with excitement as the group works through the number. The relaxed atmosphere also offers a glimpse at how comfortable the four Coaches appear together away from their red chairs.
Clarkson ultimately handles the final vocal moment, delivering the closing lyric with a powerful sustained note. That ending became one of the standout moments of the performance and quickly reminded viewers why her voice has remained such a major part of her career since winning “American Idol.”
The song choice was not actually the group’s original plan. Green revealed that he and Levine reconsidered an earlier selection and eventually decided “The Weight” was the right song for the four Coaches to perform together.
The performance also introduces an important new dynamic for Season 30. Clarkson and Levine are returning veterans who already understand the competition, while Queen Latifah and Green are entering their first seasons as Coaches. Levine has said the four quickly clicked and spent plenty of time laughing together.
Now that fans have heard what Clarkson, Levine, Latifah and Green can do onstage together, attention turns to what happens when they become competitors. “The Voice” Season 30 begins September 21 with a three-night premiere event, and if their first performance is any indication, this coaching lineup should bring plenty of musical chemistry even when they start fighting against one another for the season’s best Artists.
