Country music star Lainey Wilson has had a whirlwind rise to fame—but along with the spotlight comes something far less glamorous: public scrutiny over her body. And she’s got a few words for the trolls who think they’re entitled to comment on it.
Sitting down with Josh Smith on the Reign with Josh Smith podcast, Wilson didn’t hold back when asked if she had a message for online body shamers.
“Kiss my fat a**,” she said, laughing. “I’m playing,” she added—but the point had already landed.
Wilson, 32, isn’t just the reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year—she’s a powerhouse performer with a GRAMMY-winning album (Bell Bottom Country) and a dedicated fanbase. But in late 2022, her career momentum took an unexpected detour when a clip of her went viral on TikTok—not for her music, but for her backside.
“At first, it was funny,” she admitted. “But I didn’t expect it to hang around so long.”
The sudden attention brought a wave of new fans—but also an influx of harsh, unsolicited opinions. And as someone who crafts songs with purpose, Wilson knows just how deep words can cut.
“I’m a storyteller,” she said. “That’s why I write music—because words are powerful. And even if you don’t believe what someone says about you, just seeing it for a second can leave a mark.”
At one point, she realized the online chatter was starting to interfere with her growth as an artist.
“I felt like social media was holding me back from taking that next big step,” she shared. That’s when she made a choice—to stop reading the comments. “It’s been a struggle,” she admitted. “But it’s been worth it.”
Still, Wilson handles it all with the kind of wit and wisdom that only a Southern girl from Baskin, Louisiana, could.
“I think some people didn’t get their butt whooped as a child,” she said. “And it shows.”
Through it all, Lainey Wilson is staying true to herself—boots, sass, and curves included—proving that talent and heart are what really make a star shine.
