Lionel Richie gave American Idol fans an unexpected moment when he appeared by video during Luke Bryan’s Nashville concert just days after undergoing a heart procedure. The appearance carried extra significance because Richie and his fellow judges had a major announcement to make.
On September 24, Carrie Underwood joined Bryan onstage at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Then Richie appeared on the large screen behind them, greeting the crowd before teasing that he had a secret to share with his longtime friends.
The surprise appearance quickly turned into a major American Idol reveal. Bryan announced that he, Underwood, and Richie are all returning to the judging panel for the show’s milestone 25th season.
Underwood then confirmed another familiar face would be back as well. Ryan Seacrest will return as host when the new season arrives in spring 2027, bringing the longtime Idol lineup back together.
For fans, however, seeing Richie appear so soon after his recent health news made the moment even more notable. His representative recently confirmed that the singer underwent a procedure for atrial fibrillation, or AFib, and said the procedure went perfectly.
Richie had also experienced other health-related interruptions earlier this year. His tour with Earth, Wind & Fire was affected by several canceled performances, including dates that were called off following his latest hospitalization and procedure.
His representative said Richie was doing well but would take some time away from performing before returning to the stage. That makes his video appearance at Bryan’s concert different from a full live concert comeback: Richie participated remotely rather than performing in person.
Still, his presence was enough to send the Nashville crowd into celebration. Appearing on the screen behind Underwood and Bryan, Richie helped create a reunion between the three judges before the big announcement was made.
The upcoming season will mark a milestone for Richie and Bryan, who have served together on the judging panel since the show’s 2018 revival. Underwood joined the panel later and will now continue alongside the two longtime judges.
The announcement also settles a major question surrounding the next season. Despite his recent health setback, Richie plans to return to the American Idol judging table for Season 25.
Production for the milestone season is already moving forward, with auditions underway. The show is also relocating production from Los Angeles to the Atlanta area for the upcoming season.
