Concern surrounding Lionel Richie’s health has grown after new details revealed that the 77-year-old music legend remains hospitalized in a St. Louis intensive care unit, where doctors are now conducting cardiac-related testing.
Richie checked himself into a hospital following his August 29 concert at The Muny in St. Louis. Initial reports suggested doctors were primarily looking into possible mild dehydration, but the latest update indicates they are also examining whether a heart-related issue could have contributed to what happened.
Despite the more serious-sounding testing, there is also reassuring news.
A source close to Richie’s tour has said that he is doing OK, and current reports indicate that doctors expect him to be discharged on Wednesday, September 2, if everything continues as planned.
The hospitalization followed a performance that had already left some audience members concerned.
During Saturday’s concert, Richie completed most of his set but appeared to need additional support toward the end of the evening. Video from the show showed him leaning against his piano at one point, and during the final song, “All Night Long,” he requested a chair so he could finish the performance while seated.
Richie reportedly checked himself into the hospital after leaving the venue rather than being taken there during the concert.
At first, people familiar with the situation said doctors were investigating whether dehydration might have caused his difficulties. Richie had also been drinking electrolytes during the show and spoke to the audience about previously experiencing dehydration.
But when Richie remained in intensive care beyond the originally anticipated discharge date, another update emerged.
Doctors were reportedly conducting tests related to his heart, extending his stay while they worked to determine whether anything more significant was behind the symptoms.
That does not mean Richie has been diagnosed with a heart condition.
So far, no specific cardiac diagnosis has been announced, and his representatives have not publicly revealed the results of the testing. The latest reporting describes the evaluation as precautionary while doctors try to understand what caused the episode.
The situation is receiving additional attention because this isn’t Richie’s first health scare during his current tour.
On June 24, during a performance in St. Paul, Minnesota, Richie told the audience he felt dizzy and unusual before eventually cutting the concert short. He was taken to a hospital afterward and subsequently postponed shows in Chicago and Columbus.
Richie later returned to performing and assured fans that he was recovering.
That made Saturday’s incident particularly concerning for followers who realized that two similar episodes had occurred only a little more than two months apart.
At the St. Louis concert, however, Richie managed to finish the show.
Even after asking for a chair during “All Night Long,” he continued interacting with the audience and reportedly remained in good spirits before seeking medical attention afterward.
There is also currently some breathing room in his touring schedule.
Richie’s next scheduled performance with Earth, Wind & Fire isn’t until September 26 in San Francisco, giving him several weeks before he is expected back onstage. No cancellation of that performance has been announced as of the latest update.
For now, the most important detail is that Richie remains under medical observation while doctors complete their testing.
The move from investigating possible dehydration to also examining potential cardiac-related issues understandably sounds alarming, but reports that he is doing well and could soon leave the hospital provide an encouraging counterpoint.
At 77, Richie continues to maintain an extremely demanding performance schedule, decades after becoming a global star with the Commodores and later building an enormously successful solo career.
His latest hospitalization may therefore lead to fresh questions about what comes next for the tour—but no major changes have yet been announced.
