Lionel Richie’s health has become a concern for fans after the 77-year-old music legend experienced two medical scares during his 2026 tour. Most recently, Richie checked himself into a St. Louis hospital following his August 29 concert at The Muny.
During the St. Louis performance, Richie spoke openly about experiencing health problems on tour. He told the audience that a doctor had attributed his earlier symptoms to dehydration, and he was seen drinking electrolytes during the concert.
By the final song, “All Night Long,” Richie needed to sit down while performing. After completing the concert, he went to a hospital as a precaution so doctors could conduct further tests.
Reports said Richie was admitted to intensive care and underwent cardiac testing while doctors investigated his condition. However, no heart condition has been publicly confirmed, and dehydration was among the possible explanations reported at the time.
Fortunately, the news soon became more encouraging. By September 2, Richie had returned home to Los Angeles, with PEOPLE reporting that he was “doing great” following the three-day hospitalization.
The incident was particularly concerning because Richie had experienced another health problem only two months earlier. During the June 24 opening night of his tour with Earth, Wind & Fire in St. Paul, Minnesota, he became dizzy and performed part of the concert while seated.
That episode resulted in Richie ending the show early and postponing concerts in Chicago and Columbus. Live Nation said at the time that doctors had advised him to rest and return to full health before continuing to perform.
Richie eventually returned to the stage on June 30 in Pittsburgh and continued touring. The repeated episodes, however, have naturally led to questions about how the demanding schedule is affecting him as he continues performing lengthy shows at 77.
Some reports have quoted outside doctors discussing potential risks and tests that could be appropriate for symptoms such as dizziness. Importantly, those physicians have not been identified as Richie’s treating doctors, so their comments should not be presented as a diagnosis or as private medical advice Richie personally received.
As of September 17, Richie’s official schedule still shows him returning to the stage with Earth, Wind & Fire at San Francisco’s Chase Center on September 26. Rescheduled concerts in Chicago and Columbus are then listed for September 30 and October 2.
Richie also has several “King of Hearts” performances scheduled at Wynn Las Vegas during October and November. His official website continues to list those dates, indicating that no broad cancellation of his upcoming performance schedule has been announced.
For now, the verified picture is more reassuring than some dramatic headlines suggest: Richie experienced two significant health episodes, underwent hospital testing and was subsequently reported to be home and doing well. With another concert approaching, fans will understandably be watching closely, but there has been no confirmed public diagnosis of a serious heart condition or verified report that his own doctors have warned he is putting his life in danger by returning to the stage.
