New information has emerged following the autopsy of Hayden Panettiere, but the biggest question surrounding the Heroes and Nashville star’s sudden de@th at 36 remains unanswered.
Panettiere di*d on August 16, 2026, after being found unresponsive at a temporary residence in Greenville, South Carolina. Emergency responders arrived shortly before 2 p.m. and attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced de@d that afternoon.
An autopsy was completed the following day, and officials have now revealed one significant preliminary finding: there were no signs of trauma that contributed to her de@th. Authorities have also said there was no initial indication of foul play.
However, that does not mean investigators have determined exactly what happened.
The official cause and manner of de@th remain undetermined, with investigators waiting for additional testing before making a final ruling. Toxicology results are expected to take several weeks and could take as long as roughly two to three months to complete.
That waiting period is particularly important because early emergency communications reportedly referred to a possible overdose as well as cardiac arrest. But neither of those details establishes the official cause of de@th.
Cardiac arrest describes the medical condition in which Panettiere was found, rather than explaining what caused it. Likewise, references to a possible overdose during the emergency response remain preliminary and have not been confirmed by the coroner as the cause of her passing.

Additional details from the scene have also emerged as the investigation continues. A police report says Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother were present at the residence. Police have not accused either man of causing her de@th, and authorities have continued to say that foul play is not suspected based on the information released so far.
Investigators were also shown medications that Panettiere had reportedly been taking. Those details could become relevant when toxicology findings are completed, but at this stage officials have not publicly connected any particular medication or substance to her de@th.
The coroner’s office has since completed the physical examination and released Panettiere’s body to her family. Her remains were transferred to a mortuary on August 18, allowing her loved ones to move forward with arrangements while investigators continue working separately to determine the medical cause of her passing.
The absence of trauma is one of the clearest findings officials have released so far. It helps investigators rule out certain possibilities, but it does not provide the final answer many fans are waiting for.
Panettiere’s de@th came as she was entering another chapter of her career. The former child actress became internationally recognizable as Claire Bennet on Heroes before earning acclaim as troubled country singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville.
She later returned to one of her other popular roles, Kirby Reed, in the Scream franchise and had continued working on new projects in the years before her passing.
Her sudden de@th has generated enormous speculation online, particularly as details from the emergency response and police report have become public. But the newest autopsy update makes an important distinction clear: officials still do not know—or at least have not publicly determined—the medical cause of Hayden Panettiere’s de@th.
For now, the confirmed findings remain limited. The autopsy found no contributing trauma, authorities have reported no initial evidence of foul play, and the cause and manner of de@th remain pending.
The next major development is expected to come from the toxicology testing. Until those results are completed and reviewed alongside the autopsy and investigation, any claim that definitively identifies what caused Hayden Panettiere’s sudden de@th goes beyond what officials have confirmed.
