Jamal Roberts, one of American Idol Season 23’s most compelling voices, has proven that perseverance, passion, and purpose are just as important as talent on the path to success. The beloved PE teacher, father of three, and gospel-soul powerhouse has captivated viewers with his authenticity and emotional depth — and he’s only getting started.
1. He’s Been Singing Since He Could Talk
Roberts’ musical roots run deep — and spiritual. Raised in a devout church family, his gift for singing was discovered at the tender age of two. With one grandfather a bishop and the other a deacon, Jamal grew up immersed in the church, serving as an usher, choir member, and even a drummer.
“I was in church every time the door opened,” he told Billboard. “I started singing in church and [covering] the Temptations and Michael Jackson.”
Though he shied away from choir and musicals in school, he couldn’t resist the pull of the stage — winning every talent show he entered. That early experience helped shape his quiet confidence and performance style, which blends gospel soul with classic R&B flair.
2. He’s a Devoted Dad (and Now a Girl Dad x3)

Family is at the center of everything for Roberts. The proud father of three daughters — Harmoni, Lyrik, and newborn Gianna Grace — often draws emotional strength from his role as a dad.
“I love my daughters. They are my world, my life,” he told Parade. “They’re the reason I’m here and working so hard to keep smiles on those little faces.”
Roberts’ deep connection to music even shows up in his daughters’ names — each inspired by melody and harmony.
As a PE teacher, Jamal is also a role model to many more young lives. He credits his own former teachers and principals with inspiring him, noting their belief in his talent and resilience even when he struggled.
“They didn’t give up on me,” he said. “They saw my flaws, but they knew I had a gift for singing.”
3. His Path to Idol Wasn’t Easy — But He Never Gave Up
Roberts’ current run on Idol is the result of persistence. He auditioned twice before making it onto the show this season. The first time, he was told he needed more vocal training. The second time, he wasn’t prepared with a second song. But he took those lessons to heart.
“I didn’t get defeated [and] I never gave up,” Roberts shared. “I’ve always been able to take constructive criticism and use it for my gain and try again.”
Now, he stands in the Top 7, regularly delivering show-stopping performances that bring the judges — Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood — to their feet.
As American Idol edges closer to crowning its next winner, Roberts is already winning hearts nationwide. Through every note, every lyric, and every tear-filled moment, he’s reminding America of the power of perseverance, purpose, and staying true to yourself.
“Don’t second-guess yourself. Oh man, second-guessing can cause a lot of stress,” Roberts said. “Go with your first mind. Anything that you do, do your best.”
