Wheel of Fortune has been thrown into an unexpected behind-the-scenes shakeup involving longtime announcer Jim Thornton, and the situation has also put host Ryan Seacrest in an uncomfortable position just days before the show’s new season begins.
Thornton, who had served as the familiar voice of Wheel of Fortune since 2011, was suspended on September 1 after the production studio said it had recently learned of allegations concerning him and had launched a thorough investigation.
The controversy reportedly traces back to a May 14 American Airlines flight to Los Angeles. Another passenger raised concerns about activity on Thornton’s laptop, and law enforcement met the flight after it arrived at Los Angeles International Airport. Thornton was questioned and then released.
Thornton’s attorney has strongly denied that he committed any crime, stressing that he was not arrested and has not been criminally charged in connection with the flight incident.
Additional reports later alleged that Thornton had accessed an inappropriate online chat forum involving discussions about minors. His attorney said Thornton entered the site unintentionally while looking for online spaces connected to suicide-prevention advocacy and left after realizing what it was.
As the investigation unfolded, producers began taking significant steps behind the scenes. Episodes of the upcoming season that had already been recorded were reportedly being re-edited so that Thornton’s announcing could be replaced before they aired.
That created an unusual situation for Ryan Seacrest. A previously taped episode aired shortly after news of Thornton’s suspension became public, and viewers still saw Seacrest casually interacting with Thornton because the episode had been recorded well before the controversy surfaced.
Despite headlines suggesting Seacrest had issued a major personal reaction, there has been no verified public statement from Ryan directly addressing the allegations against Thornton. The strongest indication of his position so far is that he has continued with his hosting duties while the production company handles the matter internally.
The timing is especially awkward because Seacrest only recently took over as the permanent host following Pat Sajak’s departure. Thornton had remained one of the few longtime familiar voices connecting the new version of the show with its earlier era.
But the story has now moved beyond a temporary suspension. On September 4, the studio confirmed that Thornton had been terminated from his role following its investigation, meaning viewers should not expect him to return as announcer.
