Ryan Seacrest has found himself at the center of an unexpected Wheel of Fortune shakeup after longtime announcer Jim Thornton was suspended following allegations connected to an incident aboard a commercial flight earlier this year.
Thornton, who had served as the familiar voice of Wheel of Fortune since 2011, was suspended on September 1 while an internal investigation was launched. At the same time, producers confirmed they had already begun the process of recasting his role.
The situation reportedly began on May 14, 2026, aboard American Airlines Flight 1276. The airline confirmed that law enforcement met the aircraft when it arrived at Los Angeles International Airport after concerns were reported by another passenger.
Thornton was questioned after the flight but was not arrested or criminally charged. His attorney has strongly denied that he committed any illegal conduct and said authorities allowed him to leave after a brief conversation.
Additional information later emerged alleging that a fellow passenger had photographed material visible on Thornton’s laptop involving a highly inappropriate online chat forum. Thornton’s attorney said he had reached the page accidentally while attempting to access an online support resource and disputed suggestions that he had intentionally sought inappropriate material.
Amid the growing controversy, attention naturally turned toward Ryan Seacrest, who has worked alongside Thornton since replacing Pat Sajak as host in 2024.
However, despite headlines suggesting Seacrest had personally spoken out about the allegations, there is no verified public statement from Seacrest directly addressing Thornton’s conduct as of the latest reporting. Instead, he has remained publicly focused on his hosting duties while the production company handled the investigation.
The unusual situation became particularly noticeable when a previously recorded Wheel of Fortune episode aired shortly after Thornton’s suspension. During the episode, Seacrest interacted with Thornton normally, asking him about prizes available that night.
That interaction was not Seacrest responding to the controversy, however. The episode had been taped well before the allegations became public, meaning neither Seacrest’s friendly exchange nor Thornton’s appearance reflected what was happening behind the scenes at the time it aired.
Producers subsequently began reworking already completed episodes so Thornton’s announcing could be replaced. With the new season approaching, that reportedly created a significant amount of additional production work.
The situation then took an even more serious turn. On September 4, following its investigation, the studio announced that Thornton’s employment with Wheel of Fortune had been terminated effective immediately, ending his roughly 15-year run with the show.
For Seacrest, the controversy now means another major change during what is still a relatively new chapter of Wheel of Fortune. While he has not publicly offered a personal judgment on Thornton, the show has already made its decision — and when the new season moves forward, Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White will be joined by a different voice behind the famous wheel.
