Prince Harry’s deep admiration for his wife Meghan Markle has once again made headlines — this time due to a powerful comparison he made between Meghan and his late mother, Princess Diana.
In the couple’s Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, the Duke of Sussex described Meghan as having the same “compassion, empathy, and confidence” as Princess Diana. “She has this warmth about her,” Harry said, expressing that Meghan reminded him of the beloved “People’s Princess.”
However, the comparison has not been universally welcomed. Royal biographer Angela Levin shared a different perspective during a recent interview, saying she believed Diana and Meghan would not have seen eye to eye.
“Diana wouldn’t have been good enough for Meghan if she was still alive,” Levin claimed during an appearance on GB News. She went on to say that Diana supported the monarchy deeply — a core difference from Harry and Meghan’s current stance.
Levin added that Diana regularly visited Queen Elizabeth II and was committed to ensuring her sons respected royal tradition. “She said to both her sons, ‘This is very important — I want you to like it and take part in it.’”
The Narrative Question
The Sussexes have often faced criticism for controlling the public narrative about their lives. Levin suggested their public statements are sometimes timed to overshadow other headlines:
“When something’s on the front pages about them, they come up with something else to divert the discussion,” she said, dismissing the ongoing comparisons as “nonsense.”
While Meghan has publicly spoken about visiting Diana’s grave and feeling a spiritual connection, Levin pointed out that Meghan never actually knew the late Princess, saying the emotional ties may be more symbolic than personal.
A New Identity?
Adding to the intrigue, author Tom Bower previously claimed that Harry and Meghan have considered shedding their royal titles altogether — and even contemplated adopting Diana’s maiden name, becoming “Meghan Spencer” and “Harry Spencer.”
“That has always been her [Meghan’s] passion — to be Diana,” Bower claimed in an interview, noting that the rebranding would place Meghan even more closely in line with the image of the late Princess of Wales.
This potential shift, though unconfirmed, highlights how central Diana’s legacy continues to be in the couple’s public image and personal story.
A Divisive Legacy
More than 25 years after her death, Princess Diana remains a figure of fascination, inspiration, and debate. Whether Meghan’s role in the public eye mirrors that of Diana or diverges entirely may be a matter of personal interpretation.
What’s clear is that Harry sees in Meghan the qualities he cherished most in his mother — and that belief, however controversial, is deeply personal.
