“THE MESSAGE HE NEVER ANSWERED IS NOW BREAKING HEARTS AROUND THE WORLD.”

As family and friends continue mourning the loss of James ‘Weston’ Higginbotham, new accounts from those who knew him best are revealing just how deeply his death has affected the people closest to him.

The 20-year-old was found deceased on June 6 in a mountainous area outside Kyoto after an extensive search involving police, volunteers, rescue teams, and supporters from multiple countries.

While authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected, many questions surrounding Weston’s final hours remain unanswered.

For his family, however, the focus has been on remembering the young man they loved.

Weston’s grandmother, Judith Higginbotham, spoke emotionally during the search, describing him as someone who was highly experienced in the outdoors and comfortable navigating wilderness areas.

“My grandson is very knowledgeable of the woods,” she said.

Her words reflected the confusion many family members felt as they struggled to understand how someone so familiar with outdoor environments could suddenly vanish without contact.

Adding another heartbreaking layer to the story is the account of Weston’s childhood friend, Hiyu Shikari.

The two friends had recently reunited in Japan after years apart.

According to reports, they spent time together in Tokyo shortly before Weston’s disappearance, sharing meals, conversations, and memories from their childhood. Photos from the reunion showed the pair smiling together, unaware it would become their final meeting.

After Weston disappeared, Hiyu reportedly tried to reach him.

Concerned about severe weather moving through the Kyoto region, he sent a message hoping to check in and see how his friend was doing.

The message never received a reply.

Following confirmation of Weston’s death, Hiyu described himself as devastated.

He remembered Weston not only as a close friend but as someone he considered a brother. The loss, he said, left him shaken as he reflected on the final moments they shared together only days earlier.

Meanwhile, Weston’s mother, Nancy Higginbotham, has continued expressing gratitude for the support shown by people around the world.

In emotional statements following the discovery of her son’s body, she thanked volunteers, search teams, local residents, and supporters who helped spread awareness during the search.

“The grief we feel is impossible to put into words,” she wrote.

The search itself became an international effort.

Police officers, helicopters, K-9 teams, private rescuers, volunteers, and local residents spent days combing through rugged mountain terrain surrounding Kyoto. Difficult weather conditions, including heavy rain and storm activity, complicated efforts throughout much of the operation.

Although the search ended in tragedy, many people have been moved by the stories emerging from those who knew Weston best.

Stories of a grandson who loved adventure.

A son passionate about nature and sustainability.

And a friend whose final reunion became a memory his loved ones now treasure even more deeply.

For his family and friends, the unanswered questions remain painful.

But so do the memories.

And as they continue grieving, those memories are what they say they will hold onto most. 💔
