Joe Henley walked onto “The Voice” Season 30 stage as a relatively unknown 19-year-old singer from Grand Bay, Alabama. Minutes later, his deep country voice had Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green fighting to get him on their teams.
For his Blind Audition, Henley chose Travis Tritt’s “Anymore,” a song that perfectly suited his traditional country style. Clarkson and Green reacted almost immediately, turning their chairs within the opening moments of his performance.
What made the audition even more surprising was Henley’s lack of professional stage experience. Before appearing on “The Voice,” he said he had never really performed a gig, with much of his previous singing experience coming through his grandparents’ truck-stop ministry.
Henley had actually hoped for exactly the battle that unfolded. Before performing, he said he wanted Clarkson and Green to turn so he could watch the experienced Coach compete against the country newcomer for him.
Clarkson certainly tried. She reminded Henley that she had previously won the competition with country singers and argued that he could potentially stand out more on her team rather than joining Green alongside other country Artists.
But Green soon discovered something that gave him a major advantage. Henley was already a fan of his music, and when they began discussing influences, the teenager revealed that “My Way” was his favorite Riley Green song.
Green then grabbed his guitar and joined Henley onstage for an unexpected duet of “My Way.” It became one of the most memorable moments of Henley’s audition and made the musical connection between the contestant and potential Coach obvious.
When it was finally time to choose, Henley thanked Clarkson but announced that he was joining Team Riley. That made the Alabama teenager Green’s first team member of his debut season as a Coach.
Clarkson may have lost the recruiting battle, but she gave Henley one of the biggest compliments of the night. After his decision, she told Green, “He could win you The Voice.”
Fans quickly began having similar conversations online. Some compared Henley’s rich, low country voice to singers such as Randy Travis, Josh Turner, Scotty McCreery and Chris Young, while others were already describing him as someone who could make a deep run in Season 30.
The reaction was not completely unanimous. Some viewers felt there were notes Henley could improve and suggested that strong coaching will be important as the competition becomes tougher. Still, the overall response highlighted how quickly his traditional country sound caught people’s attention.
It is far too early to know where Henley’s journey will end, but his first night certainly gave viewers plenty to discuss. A 19-year-old with virtually no professional gig experience walked onto one of television’s biggest singing competitions, earned two quick chair turns, performed with one of his favorite country stars and left with Clarkson openly talking about his potential to win. For Joe Henley, that is quite a way to begin “The Voice.”
