The Voice Season 30 Brings Kelly Clarkson and Queen Latifah Together Again — and Their History Has Fans Excited

The Voice is preparing to celebrate a major milestone, and Season 30 already looks very different from what viewers have seen before.

The competition officially returns September 21, 2026, with Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Riley Green and Queen Latifah occupying the four famous red chairs. Kelly and Adam return as experienced champions, while Riley and Queen Latifah will make their debuts as full-time coaches.

But one combination on the new panel is already getting special attention: Kelly Clarkson and Queen Latifah.

The two stars actually have some musical history together.

Back in 2018, Kelly and Latifah teamed up for a memorable musical segment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Their doo-wop-style performance showed how naturally their voices and personalities could work together—something fans are now rediscovering ahead of their Voice reunion.

This time, however, they won’t simply be sharing a performance.

They’ll be competing against each other.

Kelly enters Season 30 with an enormous advantage in experience. She’s already one of the most successful coaches in Voice history and returned for Season 29’s special Battle of Champions edition, where she once again demonstrated how competitive she can become when building her team.

Queen Latifah brings something completely different.

The Grammy-winning rapper, singer and actress has spent decades moving between hip-hop, jazz, soul, acting and other genres. Her addition gives contestants a coach whose career doesn’t fit neatly into a single musical category. NBC specifically highlighted her hip-hop expertise while also pointing out her appreciation for genres such as country music.

And early reports from filming suggest Latifah may become one of Season 30’s biggest surprises.

People familiar with production have described her as an unusually direct coach who isn’t afraid to tell contestants exactly what she thinks. One report even compared her approach to Simon Cowell, although her criticism is reportedly delivered in a constructive and caring way.

That could create an entertaining contrast with Kelly.

Clarkson is famous for her enthusiasm, humor and emotional connection with singers, but she’s also extremely competitive. Putting that personality beside Latifah’s reportedly commanding approach could give Season 30 a coaching relationship viewers haven’t seen before.

Then there’s Riley Green.

The country singer is joining alongside Latifah as the season’s other rookie coach. Early behind-the-scenes reports suggest Riley has been considerably quieter while adjusting to his first major television coaching role, although producers are reportedly optimistic about how he’ll develop.

And sitting beside all three will be Adam Levine.

Adam returned to the franchise after his long absence and enters Season 30 fresh from winning Season 29’s Battle of Champions. That means the two returning coaches aren’t simply familiar faces—both Kelly and Adam arrive with recent competitive momentum.

But there’s another detail making Season 30 especially interesting.

This season appears to mark the final standard edition before The Voice experiments with a dramatically different concept in spring 2027. NBC has already announced The Voice: Celebrity for Season 31, with Keke Palmer hosting and celebrities becoming the contestants rather than unknown aspiring singers. Queen Latifah and Riley Green are already scheduled to return as coaches alongside Joe Jonas.

That makes Season 30 something of a bridge between two eras.

It celebrates 30 seasons with familiar champions Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine while simultaneously introducing Riley Green and Queen Latifah—two coaches who will help carry the franchise into its next experiment.

And Queen Latifah’s return for Season 31 before viewers have even watched her Season 30 debut suggests NBC clearly sees potential in what she brings to the show.

For fans, however, one of the most intriguing dynamics may still be the simplest one.

Years after Kelly Clarkson and Queen Latifah stood together and made music, they’ll finally share a television stage again—but this time they’ll have their backs turned to the singers, their hands hovering over those red buttons, and they’ll be fighting to make sure the best voices choose their team.

Season 30 premieres Monday, September 21 at 8 p.m. on NBC, and with two proven champions facing two completely new coaches, the milestone season already has the ingredients for a very different kind of battle.
