Three Instructors Charged After 21-Year-Old Woman Falls 130 Feet Without Safety Rope

Three instructors have been charged after 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas died during a rope-jump activity in Brazil, where investigators say she was launched from a bridge without the safety rope attached. The tragedy has sparked outrage as police continue reviewing what went wrong in the moments before the fall.

The incident happened at the Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, near São Paulo, a site known for attracting extreme sports groups and adventure seekers. What was supposed to be a controlled jump turned into a fatal safety failure now at the center of a criminal case.

According to reports, six people were taken into custody and questioned after the incident. Three instructors were later charged with homicide in connection with Maria’s death.

The suspects have been identified as Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves, 27, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42. Authorities believe they were the men involved in lifting and releasing Maria from the bridge.

Video from the scene reportedly showed Maria being prepared for the jump before she was launched from the platform. Moments later, witnesses realized the safety rope had not been attached and panic broke out.

Investigators said the rope meant to secure Maria remained on the platform instead of being connected to her harness. That alleged failure has become the central question in the case.

Two of the instructors reportedly fled after realizing what had happened. They were later found in a nearby wooded area with help from a military helicopter.

Deputy Andréa Dantas Levy said two of the main suspects claimed they experienced a “blackout” and could not remember when the mistake happened. They reportedly could not explain who was supposed to attach the rope or why it was not checked before the jump.

A third suspect allegedly told investigators that he was only called to help with the launch by holding Maria’s legs. Police are now working to determine each person’s role in the preparation and release.

Three additional workers who had been distributing wristbands near the jump site were also questioned. They were later released, but investigators are continuing to examine how the event was organized.

Another mystery has now emerged around a 360-degree camera Maria was reportedly carrying before the jump. Brazilian media reported that the device had been rented from the unlicensed jump group for an extra fee, but it was not found at the bottom of the bridge.

That missing camera has raised more questions about Maria’s final moments and what evidence may still be unaccounted for. Investigators are expected to review whether the camera was lost, removed, or never properly recovered.

All three homicide suspects were placed in pretrial detention after a court hearing. The judge said the detention was justified partly because the men allegedly tried to flee and because their release could create further public safety concerns.

Maria was laid to rest on Sunday after her death devastated family, friends, and people across Brazil. Shortly before the jump, she had shared a social media post from the bridge, joking about who had let her jump off it.

The Skeleton Bridge was built decades ago for a railway project that was never completed and later became a popular spot for extreme sports. Now, Maria’s death has turned the site into the focus of a criminal investigation, safety questions, and a painful demand for accountability.
